Yeah, yes, Dracula.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 0:53
All right. What 2016 movie finds a group of thieves trapped inside a house. They are trying to rob and discover the owner is not just a blind helpless victim
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:05
and the the owner is blind?
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:10
They discover the owner is not just a blind helpless victim
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:13
not to just a blind helpless victim. Is it that one don't breathe.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:21
Yes. Oh my god, you never lose.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:24
It's that. I remember because I remember the guy. The villain. He's also the guy that is from Terra Nova. Oh, the old guy in charge of turnover. Interesting. I remember. All right, the reason why I remember it. Cool. Very cool.

You guys, we have some exciting news. Our Patreon is officially live. We have tiers ranging from $3 to $10 with all kinds of goodies including stickers, art prints and ghoulster Mail Our very own thing. I have to say that some of those tears include bonus episode where we will be revisiting how we keep the spook alive in our relationship and banter about all the things we wish we could on this podcast, but time always defeats us. I know last week we mentioned that we would have a $1 tear, but unfortunately, as per usual foot in my mouth, I spoke too soon. As I was going through everything, I realized that $1 would unfortunately cost us more fees than help us so we made sure to adjust everything and make sure you guys are getting the perks you deserve for the different tiers. You can learn more at our Instagram or patreon.com slash the ghoul meets. I'll also throw the link in the show notes. And other exciting news. We hit our 1000 followers on Instagram. Holy, wow.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:18
And also the new screen movie has an official release date. January 14 2022
Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:26
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:27

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:29

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:30
Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:32
Let's see if it doesn't get delayed. I know. All right. Um, so Netflix dropped their first trailer to the haunting of Bly Manor this week. It's a follow up to the TV series, The Haunting of Hill House and I know a lot of ghoulsters are excited to see it. I don't think I'll be watching it. I have to admit that this spooky project we have coming for you guys are familiar has traumatized me. I already have sleepless nights over it. So I'm going to be passing on that.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:59
I'm pretty ugly. lasted two from sleepless nights. But unless spooky news, we have a release date for Happy Halloween Scooby Doo. We had talked about this previously. It's going to be released on my birthday and our wedding anniversary. October 6. It's going to feature a Bill Nye the Science Guy, Batman's the Scarecrow, and the mistress of the dark Elvira, I think it's gonna be wicked insane.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:28
Awesome. It sounds like we're gonna have to throw together a quick review on that because I want to watch it. I think so. Okay, all right, guys. A lot of you have asked us if Halloween is canceled this year and where our head is that in this crazy time of 2020 so we thought we'd bring in a true Halloween expert to talk all things Halloween and what quarantine Halloween looks like this year. She needs no introduction although I do consider her the fairy godmother of Halloween this year. Let's welcome Miranda Enzor from Spooky Little Halloween!
And now, let's give a Ghoulster welcome to Miranda!
Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:05
Hi, Miranda, thank you so much for joining us today. How are you doing?
I'm good. Thank you so much for having me on. I'm excited.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:12
Yes, exciting times. Okay, so we want to talk all about your blog spooky little Halloween and have a conversation with you about how Halloween is not canceled this year. But we thought we'd do a fun round of some Halloween questions before we get started and then at the end, we'll finish up with some fun. This or that questions? What do you think?
Okay, let's do it.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:33
I'll let Rudy start.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:35
Okay, Miranda, I wanted to know what is your favorite Halloween song?
Oh man, favorite Halloween song. Um, I just heard it now. I can't remember who sings it. Oh man. I will say way up there is keeping Halloween alive by Alice Cooper. I kind of feel like that is one of my like Halloween albums. And I mean just kind of given the name of my blog to spooky by classic for you can't go wrong with that one.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:59
Ghost Hostess Mandy 6:01
When's the last time you went trick or treating?
Last time I went trick or treating, I think I was like around 12 or 13. I was in junior high. And it probably was like the most epic trooper treating night ever. I was in a different friend's neighborhood. So everything was completely different. And it was like one of those experiences where there just weren't tons of people out on the streets. It was so much fun. And we just, you know, we were, you know, teenagers, tweens, whatever, at that point, so we got to roam the streets and adjust it. It was like the best way to end my trick or treating experience.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 6:31
Yeah, for sure. I wish we could do it as adults.
I know what my readers told me once. She's like, because I'm so short. I think she was like, I don't know. 411 five feet, something like that. She's like, I just throw a sheet over myself go as a ghost. And nobody questions me because I'm so short. And I'm like, dang, why do I have to be so tall?
Ghost Hostess Mandy 6:50
Yeah, that that would be such a great perk for Halloween.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 6:55
Okay, next question. If you could ban one Halloween costume, what would it be?
Sexy anything like we just don't need those. They just get more and more ridiculous every year to. That's funny.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:07
You and Rudy are very similar.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:10
Yeah. Yeah, one of our episodes I had just discussed that like a sexy Halloween costumes. I'm like, really against.
It's kind of it's an it's an easy costume to go for it. Exactly. And I like I like costumes with a little bit of creativity. I tend to like pun costumes or just really clever ones. So yeah, I feel like the the sexy anything is just kind of like really? That's the best. You could do try try harder.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:33
Exactly. Thank you. Finally,
You're welcome. We just became best friends.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:41
Okay, so what's your most your most embarrassing Halloween costume?
Oo, umm, can I say my last one that I wore gets two Halloweens ago. So my last year I did a party. I was so disappointed by this class. And by the time that I was done, my last party theme that I do was the monster mash and this was like my last big big party that I hosted and I was trying to do there's a really cool like rockabilly take on Bride of Frankenstein but I'd seen on Pinterest and so I decided to do a similar version of that and I had done like a test run on like the you know, painting myself green and everything and it was so humid in Houston that night. It just like the pain just would not stay on me. I was sweating it just it was a complete disaster. I completely forgot to put stitches like around my neck on my wrist like it just like it just fell completely flat. You can find photos of me in like costume on my blog, and they're terrible. But I would say that's probably my most embarrassing one recently because it just did not come out the way that I wanted it to.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 8:48
It sounds like we had the exact same experience because when I did Bride a Frankenstein my makeup didn't work out and I was like alright, well we are going with not elaborate makeup for this.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 8:58
Yeah, hot Halloweens are Never fun.
I tend to kind of shy away from those sort of costumes just because I know I'm not skilled enough to do the crazy makeup. Yeah. And then like that experience just kind of you know solidified it. I'm like Nope, never again.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 9:14
Okay, next one. What's your guilty pleasure? Movie non Halloween related.
Clueless is like one of my all time favorite movies like I can I can quote the entire thing. I basically thought I would share horror with like age 11 it was so oh my god my friends in sixth grade hated me after that movie came out like legitimately hate it. But yeah, I think probably my devotion to clueless is probably a bit on the embarrassing side, but I'll probably stand by that that movie pic.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 9:50
And what about Halloween related because I'm just curious now.
Halloween related. Um, I mean, I don't know that everybody and I guess also I don't know. That's a Guilty pleasure. I think it's just a pleasure Rocky Horror Picture Show. I know not everybody considers it Halloween movie, but it just has that connection for me. Right so I I love watching it at Halloween time and just the ridiculousness of it. It's so much fun.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 10:16
Yeah, I definitely consider it a Halloween Related movie.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 10:20
Okay, so do you believe in paranormal activity?
I do. I actually live with a ghost. So.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 10:27
Ghost Hostess Mandy 10:29
Okay, well, now you have to tell us more about that.
Oh my gosh. So the building that I live in, I live in Houston. I live in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. Kind of like the original suburb, I guess. I'm about 10 minutes outside of downtown in an area called Montrose. And my building was finished in the early 1900s. I think around like 1910 or so. So I mean, you live in 100 year old building, you're going to get something that you know, comes with the territory and I actually used to live on the other side of the building. So I think the first time that I really noticed something happen was a clock in my kitchen that had a pendulum on it. And the pendulum would start and stop on its own and was kind of like, okay, that's weird. Like, you know, I expect it to stop when the battery runs out. But pendulums don't tend to start again on their own. That's kind of weird. And so from there, I kind of had a couple experiences with like stuff getting knocked off shelves and you know, just kind of little things kind of odd things that kept happening. And just over time, I kind of got the feeling that it was this little girl. And she was probably like, age 1012 somewhere in there. And she wasn't she wasn't malicious or anything. She just kind of wanted to let me know, hey, I'm here I'm hanging out. And I was totally cool with that. So yeah, we just kind of shared the space on the other side. And when I moved to this side for a little bit more room and have an office and stuff, I just had this feeling that this was like the apartment where she lived or where her death happened or something so I was fully expecting to go like full gear into like ghost mode. I'm moving over to this side. And I would say maybe one night like number two or three that I was on this side, I was sitting on my bed, you know, just playing a game on my phone, something, you know, mindless, whatever. And it felt like something walked into the side of my bed and I was like, okay, like we can share this space but no, so I ended up having a little chat with my ghost. And I was like, Look, I get it. It's your space you can hang I need to be here too though because I'm the one who pays the rent so we just need to learn how to get along and you can't be doing stuff like that. And I have not heard a whole lot since then. So that's kind of the the short and sweet version of my ghost.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:38
That was a very spooky surprise we were not expecting
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:43
Does she have a name?
No, she doesn't um, I haven't like there's nothing that's really popped in my head and I haven't come up with one for her. I kind of I kind of have a healthy dose of fear. I guess when it comes to ghosts like I find them intriguing. I believe in them. You know, I'm okay being in the same space as one, but I don't know how far I want to invite it into my life. So, right. I feel like that might be a touch too far.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 13:06
I hear yah.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 13:07
Okay. Well, I think that was a good little round of our starter questions. So why don't you tell us a bit more about yourself and what spooky little Halloween is?
Yeah, so my name is Miranda. As we've already established. I live in Houston. I grew up in the Houston area. And I have loved Halloween for as long as I can remember, I started spooky little Halloween just kind of as a fun side project for myself. My background is in journalism and communications. And I back in 2015, I guess it was about, I don't know, four or five, six years into planning, my annual Halloween party Halloween roast. And I was trying to find a website where I could just, you know, find a whole bunch of Halloween party ideas, you know, all in one place rather than having to go from site to site to site to find them, and nothing really existed. So I decided if you know, I had the skills and I was like, you know, can't find it. Create yourself. So that's exactly what I did. And it was really just supposed to be a fun little space for me to dump my party photos once a year share what I was planning, maybe share a couple cool Halloween things that I was finding. And that was it and it after like a year and a half, two years it just completely took on a life of its own and became a kind of a whole entity in and of itself. So I never expected this to be a thing but here we are almost five years later.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 14:26
That's awesome. We're so happy you started out because you're such a great resource for so many people. It's amazing. So why do you think that you love Halloween so much?
You know I am I've written a little bit about this on my blog on it off. I kind of feel like Halloween is the Misfits holiday. It's a place for all of us who maybe never felt like we fit in anywhere growing up. It's you know, or one day a year that we can fit in, you know, whatever, whatever goes. You can be as weird as you want. as scary as you want. as cute as You want what a sexy as you want, I guess, I guess we have to, um, but it's it's kind of a, you know, a space for everybody to fit in and I feel like especially, I mean, given the summer that we've all just lived through that's probably something that speaks to a lot of us right now too. There really needs to be a place where everybody belongs. And so I just I think that's one of the things that I love about Halloween that that aside I just I've always loved dressing up getting the chance to be someone else for an evening has been really fun I think that kind of feeds into my writer side a little bit you know, loving characters and you know, just kind of that escapism right to another world sort of a thing. Yeah, and I love pumpkin guts to
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 15:42
We all do! How did you come up with spooky little Halloween? What's the idea behind it? The name?
Oh, man. So this this is probably one of my favorite and least favorite questions because I don't have a great answer for it. I think They kind of came up with a blog on a whim and never intended for it to really be much more than just a kind of a repository for myself. I literally ripped off Have yourself a merry little Christmas but have yourself a spoky little Halloween.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 16:12
Oh, that's a good answer!
I didn't come up with that. So it's really not that clever. Like it was something that was kind of floating around on Pinterest for quite a while. And I just liked it. And I felt like you know, spooky is kind of like it's a little on the creepy side, but it's not too far until you know, the scary stuff. And that's kind of the space that I live in. You know, spooky little Halloween and it just sounds cute and cozy. And you know, I don't know it just it felt like it fit.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 16:41
I think it's super cute now that you told us the story behind it.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 16:46
Did you ever think that you would have this large of a following?
Did I ever think that I would have a small city following me? Absolutely not. It is it there. I literally have some days where I'm just like who are All these people and like I am not as exciting Why do they follow me but i think i think you know when you find you know the other weirdos online, you know your people, your community you just kind of all gravitate towards each other and so if that if I can provide a space for that, I think that's really cool and I'm more than happy to do that so but ya know, I never expected it to be this big.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 17:21
What motivates you to keep creating like so much content like it is incredible the amount of things you have planned that we're going to get into but like what keeps you going because it's a lot of work to do content creation.
It really is. I you know, I get asked quite a bit too, like, Oh my gosh, how did you make this your full time job and I'm just like, thank you, but it's not I wish it was, um, no, I work I work a nine to five that can be rather demanding at times. So it you know, just to keep going with everything. I think, you know, my bottom line is I'm a Halloween lover. Just like everybody Else, you know, everybody else who's reading my blog who's following me on social media, all that kind of stuff. And so like, I'm creating it for me as much as I am creating it for everybody else. The summer I was just kind of sitting there, watching, you know, everybody starting to go out and Halloween hunt and you know, think through what the season was actually going to look like. And nobody was really stepping up and saying, Okay, how are we going to do this? And like, still make it awesome. So I kind of saw that gap. And I'm like, you know what, I put together a couple things. So it just, you know, as much as it is for everybody else doing all this cool stuff. It really is. It's something for myself as well. Way to celebrate Halloween.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 18:37
Yeah, for sure. I think definitely. Rudy and I started The Ghoul Mates trying to like, fill this creative void for ourselves. And people tell us like, Oh, you guys are doing so much. It's crazy. Like you're trying to take on too much too soon. Like, take care of yourselves. And we're like this. Yeah, we're tired. But we are like, fueled by like how happy we are when we do these things. So I Totally get that.
Me too. I find that, you know, I come, I come up with blog post ideas and I kind of schedule everything out, you know, the former magazine editor, I mean, I'll have to, you know, editorial calendar and I'll have to be scheduled out. But I find myself getting really excited about specific ideas. I actually have one particular DIY that I'm going to do this season. And I've been trying to do it for like two years, and I finally came up with the perfect idea. And so it keeps bouncing around my calendar where it's gonna go and I'm like, Nope, it's gonna this day because I'm excited about it. And so I think like when you have that passion, that excitement about it, I feel like it shows to in what you're creating and putting out
Ghost Hostess Mandy 19:35
Yeah, for sure. It's like once we get an idea, we can't even sleep because we just want to execute.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 19:43
Yeah. So getting into the quarantine side of things, a lot of our ghoulsters have been asking if Halloween is canceled this year, and what we think Halloween 2020 is going to look like and we wanted to have you on the show to help us officially say that Halloween is not cancelled this year. And I just really consider you our Fairy Godmother Halloween for all the work you've done to really try and save Halloween. So what do you want to say to everyone who's convinced that Halloween is canceled?
caIt absolutely is not. So I do want to say on the fairy godmother thing keep an eye out because there you guys have inspired me I've been called that a few times this year. You guys have inspired me with that and there's something fun coming with that with that moniker that has been given to me.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 20:32
So just a little tease for something coming in October. Um but as far as you know, Halloween being canceled this year. I think the thing is, I wrote this in my Halloween card that I'm sending out this year. And I think the thing is, you know Halloween spirit as much as you know we love rushing out to the stores when the you know the shelves turned orange and black and we love going to the haunted houses maybe not me I'm not a haunted house fan, but you guys everybody else out there. You guys love going to haunted houses and being Scared and you know, picking up pumpkins at the, you know, the pumpkin patches and all that kind of stuff. You know, those are, those are the things that we do to celebrate Halloween but I think unless on so cheesy, but I really think Halloween spirit is something that lives inside of us. And it's something I mean, obviously we all love it enough to celebrate it all year round with each other, you know, on with each other on the internet. So I think this is the year to really remember that and embrace it, and share that with everybody else in your life, whether they love Halloween as much as you do or not. And I just I think there's so many easy ways to still do that, you know, maybe the things that we're used to doing aren't going to be there this year, they might look a little bit different. But I think they're still you know, ways that we can create new traditions for celebrating Halloween. We can find, you know, trick or treating alternatives. You know, if that's not going to happen this year, there's still plenty of ways that we can celebrate Halloween and you know, make it every day like we do the whole rest of the year.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 21:58
Right for sure. So you have been working your boo thing so hard to save Halloween this year. So like, at what point did you realize like, oh, man, things are not looking good this year. And I really need to start planning like something to save or create a different type of spooky season?
I mean, I think I had that thought as far back as like late March, early April, kind of when our quarantine started here in Texas, right. And it was like, okay, you know, Halloween might look a little bit different this year, how is this going to impact that I was very hopeful, you know, that we would have our act together and we'd all you know, be responsible and you know, think about people outside of ourselves and not just, you know, the Karen's of the world I guess. And you know, everything just went sideways at the start of the summer with with the the pandemic. And so I think that was really kind of when it got real for me and I was like, okay, like this isn't going anywhere. Halloween is definitely going to be impacted. What Are you going to do so I would say probably like, early July is really when I started making my list of like, here's all the things that I can do and you know, started asking around a little bit too you know, okay if Halloween changes if it doesn't look like what we think it's going to what are you going to be most sad to miss out on this year and far and away it was trigger treating and you know, haunted houses kind of stuff that we do in person. So and it was from there, it was just kind of okay, how do I how can I can I if I can fill those gaps for people or provide a really fun, different alternative for a year that people can enjoy.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 23:34
Right. So how did you feel about the situation at that point? versus how you are feeling about it now?
I would say man, is this a therapy?
Ghost Hostess Mandy 23:51
Talk to Mandy!
Wait, what? How much per hour are we talking? You know, I would, how I was feeling about things back in early July, it definitely was a lot more stress just because of how bad things got in Texas for a while. And I feel like we've kind of gotten a handle on it now. But that's not to say that you know, we're not in for you know, another go around all of us with this over the fall and into winter and stuff, because we just don't know what's going to happen next. So, I mean, I was kind of feeling disappointed about Halloween looking different this year. I think more so kind of once I started asking that question of what are you going to be bummed to miss out on? Once we started getting answers back to that I was like, oh, man, this this is gonna suck. I'm gonna change things. I'm feeling a little bit better. Now. I don't know that everybody is but I'm just you know, I'm just gonna keep you know, waving my little pumpkin flag and saying Halloween isn't canceled and you know, be everybody's Fairy Godmother of Halloween and do my best to make it If not, if not a normal year, at least a memorable year in a different way. So.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 24:59
For sure, yeah, I definitely have to say that COVID-19 is a total bummer. And we're not saying anything positive about it. But it was definitely like The Ghoul Mates would not have been a thing if COVID-19 hadn't happened. And it's just been amazing getting to connect with so many different people through Instagram like you like I would have probably never reached out to you, I would have been so nervous. So it's just been great to see that people are connecting with each other and finding ways to celebrate or have virtual conversations. And I really want to talk about embracing technology, because I feel like a lot of people hear the word virtual party or Instagram Live and they like mentally check out. I know you hosted a lot of Instagram lives and we were so excited when you joined our season one wrap party live. I was just like, oh my god, Miranda joined. So I love that you embrace technology and that you're all about creating these virtual friendships and you're just so positive about it. And I know that I'm sure behind the scenes, sometimes it's hard to to stay positive. But staying positive is kind of like the most we can do right now for our communities, I think so what do you say to people who think like virtual gatherings can't be fun.
I have some of my favorite people that I've met, have been internet friends. You know, two of my, my two closest friends live in Oklahoma. And so I don't get to see them on a regular basis. So technology is how we stay in touch. My we really are going to turn this into a therapy session. My parents, my parents moved away last summer they did my parents moved to basically the opposite end of the country last summer. And so technology is how we stay in touch. I still get to see them on a regular basis, because it's not easy to get to them where they are. So it's, I mean, I think if you step back and think about it in that way, and just all the people already in your life and maybe how much you use technology like you probably use it to connect with people a lot more than you realize, right? And so I know virtual parties aren't gonna be the same as you know having a big huge Halloween party and you know having everybody you know, gathered around, you know drinking a witch's brew and you know, playing games or whatever you whatever you do at your Halloween party, but I also think it's a really fun year again to make just do something different and make it memorable and like you know, hopefully next year you're all standing around drinking your witch's brew laughing about how Hey, you remember last year when you know so and so got real Drunk On You know the virtual happy hour and you know, you just disappeared for an hour and we had no idea what happened like you're gonna make memories off of this they're going to be fun they're going to be different and I think that's kind of the the fun so that this this year has to offer
Ghost Hostess Mandy 27:42
Yeah, for sure. And I think it also kind of like pushes you to be creative. Like it pushes you to think outside the box and like, how are we going to make this look like a spooky as it would look if someone came over right now or so I think there's definitely some positivity to it to like Embrace your creativity and your imagination. And just have fun with it.
Absolutely. I mean, imagination is such a huge part of Halloween too. So if you're not if you're not leading into that, do you really love Halloween? like not to put you on the spot? But come on now get it together. Let's Let's be imaginative and creative for Halloween
Ghost Hostess Mandy 28:18
For sure. I love that.
Fairy Godmother said so!
Ghost Hostess Mandy 28:21
Yeah. Okay, so do you think that 2020 will kind of change the future of spooky season post COVID-19 like, do you think any of these new things might stick around after all of this?
I you know, I had that I was thinking about that this morning. And I'm just like, I can't I kind of keep coming back to the thought of like, is trick or treating over Is it like are we ever gonna be able to do that again, because it's it's kind of weird right now to think about, you know, picking up candy from a stranger's house and not knowing where it's been and do I sanitize it and all that kind of stuff. But I don't know maybe that's I feel like you know, it's only we're doing this at it. In late August not to spoil the the magic of podcasting, but I, you know, there's there's still two whole months til we get to Halloween and I mean, who knows what's gonna happen and you know, jokingly level nine and level 10 of this year. So hopefully things will tame down and maybe we can have some semblance of normalcy. And you know, it might be, I think maybe we might make some shifts into, you know, spending more time in a virtual space. And I know there's a lot of maybe not a lot, but there's a handful of, you know, very popular haunted houses that are making the shift to doing either a virtual or like a drive thru. Right, and then the shear and I think that's really cool and creative and could be really interesting. I mean, it's kind of it's almost like, what the internet did to basically the entire world, you know, and I come from a journalism communications background and you know, the internet just completely shook up, you know, print journalism, as we knew it, and, you know, everybody just had kind of had to adapt So I kind of I kind of view this as another version of that where, you know, it's just it's something a shake up our world. And, you know, we'll see where we all land, but I think there's a lot of potential to land in some really cool virtual spaces moving forward.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 30:12
Yeah, for sure. One of the ideas Rudy had had, and I'm like, man, I kind of hope that this evolves and turns into something. When we heard about the drive thru haunted attractions. He was saying that they someone, it's probably very costly. So that's why I'm saying long term. I hope it happens. He was talking about how they should create an actual track like the car washes are so that like it's forcing you to go the route of the actual haunted attraction because another conversation I've had is, how is that going to work? Like, what if someone gets scared and hits drive like,
Yeah, that would be me. Getting out of here. I don't want to do this anymore. flashback to fourth grade and the haunted house that I went through.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 30:57
Yeah, I don't know. It'll be interesting to see. What happens from here? Um, so from like all of these things, is there anything you hope sticks around because I'm gonna be honest, and I'm a huge homebody. Like quarantine, Halloween was made for girls like, I am like, I will take Halloween pajamas and scary movies and popcorn any day. I'm not a huge social butterfly. So is there anything about Halloween that you're like, I kind of do hope the sticks are on post COVID-19
You and I just became best friends. Because I have the exact same way. I you know, I was a little worried about this whole thing at first, like, Oh my gosh, how am I gonna get through like a month or two months of working from home and here I am, you know, five months later doing just fine. So I mean, I very much enjoy and prefer being at home too. I you know, one of the things that I'm kind of trying to encourage and I am bringing back my Instagram lives that I was doing early on in quarantine, which are really more of a distraction for myself than anything else. So it wasn't enough spending my evenings dwelling On the fact that I was in my spooky apartment, my haunted apartment. Um, but you know, I think it's I I think one of the cool things is we get the we're getting the chance to like we were talking about before hanging out with our internet friends, you know celebrate Halloween in new ways with people that maybe we wouldn't celebrate Halloween with typically because we're busy out doing things. So, you know, I'm kind of hopeful that maybe some of the the virtual Hangouts, Instagram lives kind of, you know, the parties that kind of stuff. The gatherings the internet gatherings, I guess I'll phrase it that way. Hopefully, some of those will stick around in the coming years. And while we can all still do that as a Halloween community together.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 32:40
Yeah, for sure. I feel like I've taken over the interview. I'm so sorry, Rudy. I got really excited.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 32:47
Ghost Hostess Mandy 32:48
He's also always like managing making sure the sound is all good. So I'm gonna let him jump in for a bit here.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 32:56
Thank you very much Mandy. Hey guys, I'm back. So you've put a lot of heart into saving Halloween this year. Why don't you share some ideas you have planned for the spooky season?
Yeah. So I am working on a whole bunch of blog posts kind of tips and tricks for Halloween 2020 a lot of those already up on the blog. So things like how you can pull a Halloween costume out of your closet, which is like one of my favorite things to do. I've shared some trick or treating alternative ideas. I've shared ideas for doing a micro parties with a gathering of 10 or less people as well as virtual parties have different themes that you could do. So you can go through spooky little Halloween calm and look for all that kind of stuff. I also took a lot of that content and put it into a print mini magazine. A zine basically is what I call it, even though it's not quite as like cool and grungy as like the early 90s designs. It's a little bit more polished than that but um so I I've been doing Thiss printed Halloween singing for about a year now and I had skipped over my spring and summer issues. Just because the world was so crazy and it just didn't feel right but that out right decided to supersize the one for this fall and call the quarantine a wean zine. So there's a whole bunch of ideas in there for how to celebrate Halloween, you can grab that. Also printed copies of it on my sites with the little halloween.com slash shop. You can find them over there. What else am I doing? I'm doing running some social media contests. Those actually have kicked off in early September. So doing some fun little I guess kind of challenges you know, mega mega cocktail mega dry, carve a pumpkin but every weekly contest is going to have a twist on it, but I'm not going to tell you until I announce what that week's theme is. So I'm running those on Instagram and on Facebook, spooky little Halloween at both places. What else I'm doing costume challenges in October. So we're going to put out a list prompt every Sunday with an idea for you know, make your favorite pop culture character make your item. I haven't come up with all of them yet. We'll get there to do list the monster to do list. And then it's kind of all these little tried to come up with a lot of fun, fun ways to encourage people to still celebrate, even if they maybe aren't celebrating in the ways that they're used to. So that's kind of my my quick and dirty list of everything I'm doing.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 35:26
Awesome. Thank you.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 35:29
Um, so can you kind of explain a little bit more about your Supra Instagram lives and what people could expect on them.
Another moniker that's been given to me this year that I don't hate so early on this year, again, it was just kind of really self preservation and to distract myself with my evenings. I started doing this series of Instagram lives where every night I was getting on every night, seven days a week I was getting on with a different friend a different spooky friend and interviewing them, and basically we should chat about Halloween and kind of what they do in the Halloween community and why we loved it and that sort of stuff, and we had a great time with it. And so I decided to bring those back for Halloween season. So every Monday, they kicked off on Monday, August 31. And they're all going to be in my igtv feed over on Instagram. So if you've missed one, you can go back and watch them now. Because Instagram allows you, I don't know where that feature was, you know, five months ago when I was doing things Instagram. But all of those will be in my igtv feed. If you miss one you can go back and watch but like I'm going to have Nancy nightmare and the wizard on they're going to play some music for us. My friend Mike from All Hallows geek is going to come on and talk a little bit about introducing your kids to horror movies. Ah, oh, my gosh, there's such a there's such a great laundry list. Michelle holloween is going to come on late, late in the season and share some of her favorite like her top five horror movie picks. I'm really excited about that to hang out with her. So just kind of hanging out. With a bunch of spooky friends and chit chatting about Halloween.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 37:03
Awesome. And what about your fifth anniversary party?
Eek! I know! I can't believe that it's so funny because it feels like I've been doing spooky little Halloween for like maybe two years Max and yet it feels like it's something that has always been a part of my life. And it's like, wow, it's only five years. So I'm still kind of putting together the details for that. But we're gonna, we're gonna gather on Monday, September 14 on Instagram Live and you know, do a little something to celebrate. I also have a giveaway. That will launch on Monday, September 7, so you can check out and we'll announce the winner on the 14th just a little, a little thank you for hanging out with me for five years. Awesome.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 37:44
What about your Halloween slumber parties? I was very intrigued by those.
Yeah, so Okay, credit where credit is due. Andrew from your best Halloween ever is actually the one who came up with that idea and pitched it to me and he's like, hey, you're doing these Instagram lives. You know, it'd be cool I was like, Yeah, that'd be super cool. So I'm very grateful to Andrew for throwing that idea out at me and also helping me make it happen because he and his, his partner who also runs your best Halloween ever with him, Devin, they, they jumped on it and to wrap things up, but we we had one night where, you know, we just kind of did an Instagram Live and bounced from person to person. And, you know, we made a cocktail, we did some timber trivia, we had some movie picks, and then Andrew wrote us that original story to send us off to bed for our spooky slumber party. So we had a ton of fun with that. And so we're gonna do that again on Friday, October 30 time TBD still. But that night on Instagram Live, we're gonna we're gonna hang out with some spooky friends again, you know, just kind of probably later in the evening, but yeah, just kind of kind of like a New Year's Eve celebration and you know, ring in Halloween together on Instagram Live. It'll be fun.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 38:53
That's awesome. Okay, so are there any other virtual events happening that you think people can fill their spooky season void with this year.
Yes. And so creepy kingdom. Am I allowed to name drop an other podcasts while I'm on your podcast, oh god!
Ghost Hostess Mandy 39:08
I know that they are doing Halloween at home and they're kind of doing it. There's some stuff I think that's happening on their podcasts but then also like on their site and everything. So they're definitely stepping into this space to try and you know, help people celebrate Halloween at home, which is really exciting. I'm trying to think I know. I know. Mike from All Hallow's Geek. I don't know if I'm allowed to say this. I'm gonna put it out there though. Sorry, Mike. I know Mike is gonna do a series of Instagram lives in October. And kind of chit chatting with some of his favorite Halloween people. So I think that'll be really fun. I'm trying to think what else is happening I keep seeing more and more virtual haunted houses pop up, which I think is really cool. So I think you know, just keep keep watching on that stuff. And see what happens. For sure. I think As we get more into September, yeah, even I mean, I know you guys have done a great job too on social media of sharing cool things that you're finding too. So I just say, you know, follow along with The Ghoul Mates too and they'll they'll reshare some cool Halloween stuff for you. They got you covered.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 40:14
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 40:17
So we have to ask, what are your plans for the big day on October 31?
Oh, man, you know what? I don't have any yet. Honestly, um, Halloween tends to be a fairly quiet day for me as much like hooplah as there is online for me leading up to it. The actual day of Halloween, I usually just kind of hang out like I might watch a scary movie that night. One one night a couple years ago, we had a really cool thunderstorm that went through Houston and so like I just kind of sat my window open and watched that for a little while, listen to some spooky music and, you know, Halloween tends to be fairly low key for me I also my word my neighborhood is just because it's fairly I don't get a whole lot of sugar and don't get any trick or treaters. Unfortunately, the neighborhood organizer is something that I've never participated in it because I don't have kids and I'd like that weird you know aunt who's like here kids have some candy. That's not okay.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 41:14
It sounds like Halloween is your day off since you celebrated all year long.
Yeah, it really kind of is just you know, I hang out I have a drink job.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 41:24
Yeah, I can imagine you've been working so hard to keep the spirit alive. I'm sure like the day the 31st hits. It's like Okay, time to take a little catnap before we start Halloween every day on November 1 again. All right, so here at The Ghoul Mates, much like on your blog, spooky little Halloween we celebrate Halloween all year as we just mentioned, I was wondering if you could share a bit about your Halloween book club for those of our listeners who love reading.
Yes, absolutely. So I am in addition to loving Halloween one of the few things that I love as much or probably more than Halloween is reading. And I actually had a blog prior to doing spooky little Halloween. That was all about music. And I tried to launch like a call that the rock novel reading club, something like that book club. I don't remember. Anyway, um, it never really took off. I never really was super dedicated to it, but I loved the idea. And so I decided early 2018 to give it a try with spooky little Halloween and kind of see what happened and we are quickly closing in on 4000 members, Good God, Facebook group right now, once again, I don't know who all these people are, but they love Halloween reading and hang out with me. So I'll take it. But we it's fairly simple. You know, I know people are busy and we love reading but maybe we don't have a ton of time to do it. So we only read books once a quarter. I'm sure a fair number of my my members would love to read more than that. But we do one in the spring, summer, fall and winter. each season has a theme to it. So going into the fall we're going to be reading a graphic novel Spooky graphic novel of some sort. And you know, just kind of hang out in there and share you know, book recommendations and really read something together once a season. It's a ton of fun.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 43:11
Awesome. I know we have a few readers in our community, so I'm sure they're gonna be looking forward to that.
Yes, absolutely. That's right. I don't know if I said it, but that's over. It's a Facebook group. So the Halloween book club just look for it. And then I also started a sister Instagram account for and also the Halloween book club. Very creative with my names over here.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 43:32
All right, well, before we let you go, we wanted to do a fun short round of questions. So I'm gonna let Rudy kick it off.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 43:39
kick it off. Hi guys. I'm back again. Okay, Miranda, we're gonna get into the nitty gritty right here. So God, The Addams Family or The Munsters.
Oh, I, you know, I think I'm gonna have to say The Addams Family because I grew up watching that more I love both. I genuinely love both but I watched a little bit more Addams Family growing up so I think I tend to err towards them.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 44:08
Okay, pumpkin spice latte or pumpkin cheesecake.
pumpkin cheesecake all the way pumpkin spice lattes are gross.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 44:21
Okay, I'm Tim Curry or Levon Cox.
Oh, are you freaking kidding me? How can you possibly pick? I mean, Tim Curry I guess because I just love him so much as Frankfurter but Laverne is so good to at everything she does. Oh, I can't pick I can't pick.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 44:47
That was Rudy's question so he stumped you.
He did. That was a good one.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 44:53
Okay. My question is, don't hate me. Yoga witches. Yoga skeletons you have to take one even if you hate both
Okay, can I tell this story for anybody who does not know?
Ghost Hostess Mandy 45:10
We need context here. I am completely baffled by this trend where we have skeletons in yoga poses that counts as Halloween decor like no offense anybody who loves yoga I love yoga. I don't do it nearly as much as I wish I did but I do enjoy it but it just like I don't know yoga poses do not scream Halloween to me but to each their own. I don't know I also really love maybe don't listen to me because I really love the pastel decor at Michaels that everybody else hates. But I don't love it for Halloween decor. I love it for year round decor. And that makes sense. I don't know they just they just don't make sense and like I would have loved to be in that marketing meeting where somebody was just like Okay guys, I got it this year, yoga skeletons. What? No, no, no and then they keep coming back to And I'm completely convinced it's because they don't sell here after I'm sorry I'm like totally taken over the podcast. Oh my god, you had now idea I was this passionate about this, did you?
Ghost Hostess Mandy 46:11
No, I knew that's why I asked cuz I'm like she has to take one whether she likes it or not.
I'm getting there we're getting there so it just yeah I just don't I just don't get it so and then I'm completely convinced that's where I was I'm completely convinced that because they don't sell they just keep bringing them back year after year so it's literally the same exact decor that we're seeing because they can't sell it because nobody wants it. Except for you apparently Mandy but that's fine. And then this year, all of a sudden we have yoga witches to like no nobody, nobody asked for this. Nobody asked for this. Maybe Mandy did. Nobody else asked for this. We don't need it. But if I absolutely have To pick I guess I would have to go with the skeletons cuz I don't know at least they're cute and they're kind of creepy like the witches are just weird
Ghost Hostess Mandy 47:08
Ridiculous I know that's the word you want to use. That's what makes I don't know I guess when I saw them I'm looking at them right now. I think it's funny because like the one that that's like doing the namaste pose, she just looks like she's so excited for her pumpkin spice latte.
I'll say this they're not my cork. They're not my Corrigan Halloween like I love the pastel decor, like I love pink Halloween stuff. I know I am very much in the minority on that and I'm okay with it. So the yoga witches and skeletons they're just not my work done right. That's fine to each their own.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 47:53
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 47:58
The final this or that? Sam or Chucky?
Oh, I would take Sam because Joyce I mean, people may not be shocked by this. I have not seen any of Chucky movies.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 48:10
Not one. I'm a terrible horror movie watcher. So I'm getting better. I'm learning. I have a list that I've been working through this year. But yeah, I have not seen I'm calling them the Chucky movies like I don't even know is that the right term? Is the first one called Chucky?
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 48:26
They're called Child's Play.
There we go. Yeah, I don't even know what actually called. So I have seen Trick or Treat though. So I will go with Sam.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 48:36
And he's cuter to be honest.
I mean, I think so too.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 48:40
He's a little creepy.
But I would take Chucky over any of the yoga stuff in a heartbeat.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 48:53
That's fair. Okay, well, it was so fun having you on the show today. Thank you so much. This has been a blast of love talking Halloween with you guys. Yeah for sure. So before we let you go Do you want to kind of share with our audience where they can find you where you want them to connect with you?
Yeah, absolutely. So you can find me on the internet spookylittlehalloween.com is the blog and spooky little Halloween on Instagram and Facebook and then spky Halloween on Twitter and Pinterest because those dang character accounts don't let you put your whole name it so sprinkling Halloween everywhere. Just search for me and I'm out there and yeah, come hang out with me on the internet. We'll have some Halloween fun this year.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 49:36
Yes. Some quarantines fun.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 49:41
All right Miranda, I'm sure we will be seeing you around in the virtual world. So stay spooky.
Bye. Thank you guys so much.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 49:54
Alright, guys, it's time for our second
Fables from Our Familiar
Ghost Hostess Mandy 49:58
We're gonna be really honest. Hear we've struggled with this son. Oscar did an amazing job putting this together. And we just haven't found like the right way to execute this, because there's just so many mixed emotions about it. And we have to give a special thanks to Miranda because she was a total trooper trying to help us figure out how to execute this. And after going through that with her, we re evaluated. And so here is...
Fabels from Our Familiar
Ghost Hostess Mandy 50:26
As we mentioned before, Oscar has been picking some topics that are related to the show topic. So this story is about Brent Underwood's quarantine. In 2018. Brent Underwood purchased a ghost town Cerro Gordo, with a spooky past for $1.4 million, with the goal of transforming it into a tourist attraction. The town was featured in the show Ghost Adventures on season 22 Episode Three titled Cerro Gordo the ghost town. Thanks to unfortunate timing Brent started his quarantine Snowden and is now ridingit out in 100. Ghost Town. A little background on Brett Underwood. Brent Underwood is a partner at a creative advisory firm, founder of a hospital in Austin, Texas and now a co owner of Cerro Gordo the historic ghost town in California. He is also known for writing several articles and blogs for several well known outlets like the New York Observer and Huffington Post. He grew up outside of Tampa, Florida and went to FSU and continued his education in New York City and Columbia University. Cerro Gordo, also known as fat Hill is located in California, with a three and a half to four hour drive north from Los Angeles. This small mining town was partially responsible for led growth and economic development in the 1860s. It reached its peak and is that that more silver was mined here than any other California in town. According to the Ghost Adventures episode, the mine is 1100 feet deep, approximately the height of the stratosphere in Las Vegas.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 51:53
Oh man, that's huge.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 51:55
So here's a bit about Cerro Gordo's haunting past. The best shophouse to young kids hid in a steamer trunk where they got locked in and died. It is believed that they are responsible for jumping on the chest of people sleeping in the bedroom. There have been two different accounts of people saying when they slept in the bedroom, they felt something jumped on top of them, but nothing was physically there.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 52:18
Sounds like somebody needs some pepto. I just think it's a mild case of some indigestionn. Some heartburn.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 52:28
Okay, here's a bit more about the minds. In the 1870s, a group of approximately 30 Chinese miners were working in the mines. While working in this job. It caved in and they were all crushed in the cave. The bodies were allegedly left and are still buried there to this day.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 52:45
That is going to be like one of the worst ways to die just like you're working hard to get that money and then poof, everything collapses around you and that's it. It just being buried alive being crushed alive. That's like one of the worst way So those I think
Ghost Hostess Mandy 53:01
Yeah, it's pretty rough. So to put into perspective, before we move further into this, I kind of wanted to explain how small this town is. So the small town is comprised of just these few buildings, including a bunkhouse, a church, an antique store, an Ice House, the Gordon house, a cabin, the belshaw house, a clubhouse and the hotel. That's the entire town.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 53:31
That's some shining vibes right there. Yeah, you just need a maze to get people disoriented and scare the crap out of them.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 53:42
Okay, so here is where the quarantine part of the story begins. In April 2020 when the quarantine orders started to come through the caretaker of the town needed to go back to Arizona to check on his wife. Brent was under the impression he was going to take over duties for a week. Then the snowstorm hit and left him trapped in a ghost town under five feet of snow. He was melting snow for water and living off rice and canned tuna for a while with the closest grocery store being 26 miles away in the closest town
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 54:13
Being stuck in like five feet of snow is no fun thing cuz like what I'm like 5' 9 5'10 so being like going outside and seeing like a thing of snow as tall as you and I'd freak out. That's when that's when my anxiety would kick in and I don't know I don't know what I would do in that situations too crazy.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 54:36
Yeah, so you can see this is already starting to get intense and that's because we haven't even gone into the ghost.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 54:44
Ghost Hostess Mandy 54:46
So before purchasing settle go to the Brent claimed he was a firm non believer in ghosts even stayed in the belshaw houses rumored haunted room and did not encounter the children. his stance changed when he had a weird encounter at the bunkhouse One night he was walking by and pass the bunkhouse, he noticed the light was on and looked at the first window. The curtain had opened and closed and he saw a face look out at him. At the moment he didn't think anything of it since he had contractors that stayed on the property. In the morning he asked the caretaker how long the contractors would be staying in the bunkhouse. And the caretaker responded that they had left two weeks ago.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 55:23
But what if it was a caretaker?
Ghost Hostess Mandy 55:26
But they left two weeks ago,
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 55:28
but was the caretaker there with him?
Ghost Hostess Mandy 55:42
weirded out he went back and lock the door with a padlock. Later that same day, he went out for a hike in the evening and noticed the light was on again. He doesn't know if it was a ghost but still pretty creepy. He updates his Instagram and Youtube channel ghost town living regularly about his daily adventures. So here's the part coming up that we have been struggling with how to discuss. So let me get into that.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 56:08
Get into it.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 56:12
On June 15 2020, the 100 and 49th anniversary of when the hotel was built June 15 1871. Brent was awakened at around 3am to the hotel up in flames. After help from the fire department, they were able to put out the fire, but the fire already burnt down three historic buildings, the ice house, the house and the hotel. Brent was told that since the buildings were so old, 1000 different things could have been the cause of the fire. Brent had commented that a caretaker at the town told him they had seen a shadow person in the kitchen the previous day, Brent confirmed he has heard things moving and dropping in the middle of the night. He's also witnessed a light in the bunkhouse that keeps turning on and claimed his wallet disappeared for two days and then appeared in the town hotel.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 56:57
Maybe he was sleepwalking.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 57:01
That's not a bad theory.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 57:03
Maybe, maybe all the stress got to him. Like all the things that he thinks are ghosts, I think it might be anxiety because he's by himself. And you can easily imagine these things and maybe induce like a sleep walking event. I would look into that. See if he sleepwalks.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 57:18
That's a good theory. So Brent believes the spirits aren't malevolent and respects their space. But he has said that he stayed in the rumored haunted room at the belshaw house, but he has not encountered the children. He's also been brave enough to travel 1000 feet into the minds and create a small little mountain the mines complete with a rug couch and lamp. He posted photos and videos that can be seen on his Instagram and YouTube channel.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 57:44
That doesn't not sound appealing at all. After you told me the story about the miners, I got stuck in there and smashed into pieces. I wouldn't want to go into that mine.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 57:53
Yeah, like why would you even want to? I don't know. Go in there. Okay, so that concludes the story. apart, right? To give a little background though. So when I read this story that Oscar put together I was very intrigued. It sounded scary. I was like quarantine sucks. Imagine being isolated completely like, for miles by yourself in five feet of snow with ghosts,
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 58:24
RIght. I don't even think that the the ghost thing is what scares me. I think just being alone by yourself. And like, he like even just walking outside and slipping and breaking your leg and like not being able to like do anything about it.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 58:43
Yeah, to add an extra level of anxiety for me.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 58:45
That's what's scary. Not the ghosts. Okay, because you could I think you can always look, I think people imagine ghosts. If ghosts are real, and I've talked about this, I mean, they might be might not but I think just being alone is the scariest part.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 59:01
So I was curious, and I researched more into it, I went to the YouTube channel. And then I initially was very skeptical about this. We talked about this in the previous episode about how the truth can be manipulated to exploit certain stories to create entertainment. And so my first thought was, this guy has like really good quality clips and footage. It seems really planned out to me. He's admitted his intention was to create a ghost town attraction out of this. And so all of it just seems like very

Strategic and so this is where we've been kind of torn on how to approach this conversation. And it kind of went very awkwardly with Miranda, I'm so sorry again, for putting you through that, but I think it kind of triggered Rudy to like really go and look at the footage himself because all of this was his reaction to it was me telling him like, This guy has all this perfect footage, and it's clearly a great production. And so, I guess Rudy finally got curious and he's like, I'm gonna go watch these videos, and develop my own analysis. So why don't you share how you're feeling now about the situation
analysis? So yeah, I went in to the videos. I'm not really expecting much. I know that you talked about like, a higher quality of videos. Uh huh. And I just start I started watching the landing video. And it's kind of like it's edited pretty well. I wouldn't say it's like, you know, Saving Private Ryan or anything. But, um, you know, the one thing that I did notice was I was looking For a camera crew, because that'll give you a hint of like maybe this guy spending money on somebody to put this whole thing together. But what I gathered was that this guy was shooting the whole thing by himself. Like you would notice like shots like going from overexposed and then going underexposed so he would go from the inside to the outside and the exposure would change so that told me that the camera was set on automatic and then you could see you know, the, the the lens, he you could tell that he said the camera to do like autofocus to track his face. So there's a lot of shots were coming in and out of focus, and then sometimes a focus would be behind him. So that told me that he was the only one there recording, right? Um, another trick that I that a lot of people do when they're trying to figure out what the lighting is for like shots is they'll try to look for little highlights in sunglasses or or people's eyes. balls in their retinas, you know, show you the shapes of whatever lights are there. So I never saw any lights. But I did see a camera and it was only one camera and he was holding it the whole time. So it led me to believe that he was the only one shooting this stuff. The audio wasn't really good either. You could tell because there's like tons of echoes. And then it comes in and out of like, just different loudness. Mm hmm. And then one other thing that did kind of catch my eye was like, he I watched the video where he talked about how the building burned down. And I was like really wanted to see like what he did for that. And the only video that I saw was just the wreckage of the whole building that was burnt down. And to me as a filmmaker. I would have showed the building on fire because he said that he was awakened by an explosion from a propane tank that was inside the house inside the building and he saw the building burned down. So I would have showed that and he didn't show any of that stuff he just saw, like the destruction stuff. And then like in that same video, you could see that he was kind of upset. And he was like trying to talk about, like, what happened and how he needed help. And he seemed pretty genuine when he was talking about, you know, needing help. And he was just devastated by all this and how he he let down like the people that invested in this project with him and his friends and stuff. And I don't know, it's kind of hard to fake. Like those emotions unless you're, like, really trained to do it. So I got the sense that he was genuine about like, what he was trying to do. But yeah, I mean, I really can't speak to what the whole ghost thing but the the videos seem pretty genuine. Because real, it seemed Yeah, it seemed real. There's just like these little hints and stuff. And like when you're doing video and sound for the longest time you pick up on these little things. Yeah, I think he just was shooting everything by himself and he might have somebody editing for him, or he was doing it by himself. But yeah, it seemed pretty real to me.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:04:10
It's funny because it's the first time that I'm the one over here trying to debunk something.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:04:17
I can debunk the ghost stuff if you want me to, but no, video stuff is concerned. I think it's real.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:04:22
I guess for me, being from a marketing background. I'm just like, this is too good. Like, you buy a ghost town. Now your quarantine there. Spooky things happen. A fire happens and you magically have footage, like of the entire journey or sight of the fire burning or the burning building. So it's hard for me to think like, how did all that magically come together?
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:04:48
Yeah. And here's the other thing too. The other thing that I had to discuss to you about is like you're stuck here and you can't get out of there. But you can edit the footage and upload it.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:05:01
Yeah, but and do they really have that good Wi Fi in this random ghost town?
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:05:06
So like, so we're in quarantine and I have to edit videos and I have to upload them. And, you know, it takes a while to do that stuff and it's not easy. It's but and this is like in a regular city with regular Wi Fi. So, you know, being in that area, secluded, you know, I would think it's very difficult to even have like a hotspot into upload that stuff. I think it's would be pretty impossible or he spent like a ton of money on some type of like antenna array where you can upload straight into a satellite but that's the only thing that that's one of the the things that kind of make me think that maybe it's not real is like how are you getting this information out to the world if you're like secluded in this area? Yeah.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:05:52
Or if it's like if it was real, but then he waited a while to release the story. Yeah, like it's in real time, but it's not. Yeah. Um, so I don't know. Like, I think that this is still a very tragic thing. Like if it's true, right? And it really burned down like, that freaking sucks. Yeah, like, that's terrible that you spent so much money invested. Right? And all these plans and all this happened. And that's part of what also makes me think like, well, maybe he is telling the truth because if it is supposed to be like a haunted ghost town attraction, right, you're kind of like risking it losing that draw, right? Because if the buildings are gone, then are the ghosts gone? Right? So I don't know. I'm just like really torn about this one because from like a business marketing side, I'm like, this sounds like all the pieces aligned, perfect opportunity to tell a story. But then on the other hand, it's like isn't really the best story because you're kind of losing your like one draw of the historic building with possible ghosts in it right. Um, So I don't know, but then I'm really stuck on the whole, like, how is he uploading these things?
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:07:05
Well, I know that he has like the contractors and stuff, maybe you know, it wouldn't be hard to have a bunch of SD cards and just be swapping them out for someone that's editing somewhere else. Yeah, good Wi Fi. But see, I don't really, I don't really think that the ghost thing is a huge deal breaker when it comes to a scary place because I saw the footage of the place and in this tiny like this little town Mm hmm. And it is super dark, and spooky. all on its own. You don't need any frickin ghosts in that place to scare the crap out of you. Like it's just, it's creepy. I'd be more worried about like a killer or a Chupacabra coming out to like kill everybody
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:07:45
like a Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the middle of nowhere.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:07:48
So yeah, it's like an exactly like, what if somebody would like here's about this place, and it's like, Hey, you know what? This place is secluded. I'm gonna kill everybody over there.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:07:57
Oh my gosh.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:07:58
that's more scary than any ghosts. So, yeah, I think even if he rebuilds the hotel and stuff like that, I think it's still gonna draw on people because it's, it's pretty scary on its own. Yeah, that's true. But you got to think about this too. What if there's ghosts from the miners that got crushed?
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:08:17
Yeah, that's my thing too. That's let's like have really strong presence there. Like, even if there is no such thing as ghosts, or there hasn't been any encounters with these things, like, that's a really heavy topic. Like you must feel something right from that. And it makes me wonder to like, how is he okay with all of this? You watch the videos. He seems like so calm, like, Oh, it's totally normal that I heard this ghost the other day.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:08:54
I think in those situations, you have no other other option than to be caught. Cuz if you if you let any like doubt, creep into your mind when you're out there, you're just gonna lose it and you just cannot do that.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:09:09
I guess. I don't know. I mean, so I'm always terrified. You know this. This is true. My sleep paralysis. Reading scary stories doesn't help. And I was noticing too when we interviewed Miranda earlier, she's like, so calm about her ghost. Oh, yeah, she talks about it like, Oh, yeah, I have a ghost. I have an agreement. And I'm like, Dude, why are you freaking out right now? I'd be like, Don't ask me about my ghost because what did you wake her up? Thank you for being a trooper Miranda. But yeah, I'm just like, I don't know. Maybe you're right. And when you actually encounter something, it like forces you write your freaking beep together. Yeah. Um, but I don't know. It's interesting.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:09:51
I was thinking about Miranda's goes to, um, you were talking about this and it's just like, I would welcome a ghost if I was stranded in the middle of nowhere. At least you'll be there with somebody and you have to do it the way Miranda did is like, Hey, no sit you down. Hey, I know that we're in this situation together, let's work on, you know, a rapport. And help me get through this. Okay? I'll get you whatever you need to get you some, some zimas or something. But you could tell my age, but, you know, I would welcome a ghost over like being stranded by myself losing my mind.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:10:26
You're like, hey, ghosts. Do you want to play tic tac toe in the snow?
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:10:31
Oh, man. But what do you what do you think about going would you go to that ghost town if we were invited? Llike, well, it's still being built.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:10:43
I'd be like, Oh, man, I don't know. Because now I'm like, Well, yeah, but it'd be like, okay, we're going but we have to leave by the time sunset happens.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:10:52
No, I'm thinking about like, like for a weekend.
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:10:54
Are you crazy?
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:10:56
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:10:57
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:10:59
What do you think goes Should we take a trip to the ghost town and see if it's real or not? Ah,
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:11:04
that's not even an option. pretending like if they say yes, we're going uh No.
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:11:11

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:11:40
I don't know. I just I'm so I'm just gonna kind of go off topic a little bit and maybe we'll do like a little side episode for our Patreon, right? But my whole thing is like I've always been afraid that the more you in vite the topic the more you're opening yourself up for things spooky things to happen to you. Right. And so that's kind of been my thing like, the spooky project we're working on. A I'm reading all these crazy things and I'm like, What if I'm inviting these things I'm reading about into my life, right? Um, and same thing like the more scary movies you start to watch, so I'm just like, I don't know. And then the stories I've been hearing Rudy like, No, thank you. I don't want to go and bring one of the miners home with us. No,
Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:12:26
like in the haunted mansions the guys that are trying to hitchhike with you
Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:12:30
Yes, spirits follow you these things follow you. I'm not gonna go and expose myself to one and be like, Oh yeah, Bruce and Lolo Look what I brought home in the backpack,
like the grudge. Oh, yeah, that's Yeah, maybe we shouldn't touch that.
Just in case just just in case even though you don't believe. spooky season is getting me this time and it's all for you guys. I'm like, sacrificing My mental health free
