Ghoulster 0:01

Welcome foolish Ghoulsters to the podcast that keeps the spirit of Halloween alive all year through pop culture and nostalgia and now it's love at first fright with The Ghoul Mates.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 0:17

Ghoulster 0:30

Horror Trivia.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 0:33

What 2005 Eli Roth film set in Slovakia featured the satanic tortures of the elite hunters.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 0:48

No idea.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 0:50

Wanna take a stab at it?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 0:52

I got nothing honestly.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 0:54

Hostel.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 0:56

Oh, yeah, I would have never guessed that.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 0:58

Have you seen hostel?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 0:59

No, I haven't.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:00

It's pretty hardcore.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:02

Um, is it like Saw?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:03

Really hard to watch. Oh, kind of. There's a lot of torture. In Saw that's kind of more like, you're it's more of like a game.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:12

Mind game.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:13

That's why he says, I want to play a game.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:15

Or do you want to play a game?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:17

Yeah. But yeah, it's just mostly torture.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:21

All right. I'm willing to take a stab at it. Oh, it's my turn.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:28

It is your turn.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:29

Okay. In 2014 sorry. Scratch that. This 2014 movie involves a widowed mother who becomes worried when her son asks her to read a scary pop up children's storybook

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:44

Oh the Babadook.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:46

Dang it, another one. Oh, you're too good, Boo.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:53

I'm pretty good. I am the Babadook of the group.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:57

Is that a thing? Really?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:59

No. I'm just making that up.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 2:01

Okay, ready for some

Ghoulster 2:03

Haunted Housekeeping.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 2:06

So Ready.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 2:07

Okay, I'm gonna keep it short today and just send a Ghoulster reminder that we are hosting our season two wrap party on Instagram Live next Friday, November 13 at 6:30 Pacific Standard Time or 1:30am later that night for our loyal UK ghoulsters so that means if you are in LA that is 6:30 if you are in Arizona, that is 7:30 and so forth. Okay, and I lied one more small reminder, if you follow us on Insta, you know that we have something special coming? Spookmas! I mentioned this a while back, but I love celebrating every season so if you're wanting in on our Spookmas Ghoulster mail be sure to pledge by November 15. To make sure you qualify for our Spookmas Ghoulster Mail.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:03

I'm excited for two Christmas gifts now.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:07

Two?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:08

I got Christmas and now we got Spookmas.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:10

Spookmas is the new Christmas.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:13

But I still get two gifts.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:15

No you already get two gifts for your anniversary and birthday.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:17

Are you're gonna be that person that the the kid that has the birthday on Christmas and the only get one gift? You remember that?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:31

Yes, I know what you're talking about. But don't be the person who acts like you understand that.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:35

You're gonna be like oh, here I got you this a robot toy and you're the gift is the batteries. You better get me two gifts and they better be good ones.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:45

I am your gift.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:48

Do you have the receipt?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:50

Oh, wow. It's called divorce. Okay, so what are we up to this episode? Well, we mentioned this back in our very first episode that the intention behind this podcast was always to also give some love to my favorite season of fall. But something I hate is that I know fall is supposed to be like September through November. But for me it's always focused on spooky season. So that really leaves fall for like November through thanksgiving for me. And since next week is our grand Friday the 13th finale. We have one episode just one to squeeze in all the fall and autumn talk. And we actually decided to tackle a special that our Ghoulster Monica requested and if you haven't already guessed it is the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. And of course we have our

Ghoulster 4:47

Fables from our Familiar.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:49

But first, we must talk fall. So, Rudy, what does fall or autumn mean to you?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:58

Oh, excuse me. I just burped right now. And I had a pumpkin flavored cupcake. So that's part of it. Anything that tastes like pumpkin is part of fall for me. So you know what else feels like fall? There's also the cold weather. There are the watching friends and how much your mother like those those episodes with like Slapsgiving and in the football game between Monica and Ross.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:30

Yes.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:32

The Geller Bowl, that is one of the they call it

The Ghoul Mates 5:34

Geller.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:38

Football and also just kind of like driving around in the cold. And just like seeing like decorations go up for Christmas, or like the fall leaves and listening to John Mayer. You know, that's that's very fall to me.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:57

I hear that I hit I almost thought you had stolen my notes. But mine's a little different than that.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 6:04

But yes, I love fall cuz I'm, I get to wear hoodies more often. And at the same time, I tend to eat a lot too. So the hoodies kind of hide the fullness sometimes specifically in on Thanksgiving. So yeah, hoodies, John Mayer, football, Geller bowl.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 6:28

You guys, I have to rant for a second that Rudy drives me crazy in the fall because his hoodies, he will like us one one time. discard it and it becomes like it goes into the hamster, hamster. Hamper because it becomes like Well, is it dirty? Or is it clean? Then he pulls out another one and literally like within one week, I have like a full load of hoodies to wash.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 6:56

And then they get so heavy in the in the washing machine that it starts to shake all wildly.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:01

It's crazy. I feel so bad for our neighbors. They're probably like, what are they doing?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:06

I know sometimes you're like, hey, I need help. And I'm like what? And like you can see like the washing machine like in the middle of the room. It spun all the way out.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:17

So guys, send help tell Rudy to stop using so many hoodies.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:21

I'm like that with blankets too.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:24

Yeah, but thankfully we don't have that many of them.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:26

Yes true.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:27

So you're forced to only use maybe three at a time.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:30

I try to use one at a time. But sometimes Bruce or Lolo they'll start like chewing on it or like you know, licking it and make it all gross. So I just like put that one in the in the hamper and stuff but yeah, anything that I can put around me and get all cozies is my thing. Or like it gets really cold and you like put your feet in between like the crevies of the couch. crevices.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:55

Or the dog.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:55

Or the dog. Yeah, Bruce he loves to come like, he'll, I'll lay down on the couch. He'll jump on on the couch and he'll put his butt like near my feet.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 8:06

Yes.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 8:06

I will just put them like right under his butt. Like, like socks.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 8:09

Mm hmm.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 8:10

You just warned me right up.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 8:11

It's so amazing. Last winter was like my first winter post surgery. And so he would like lay down on my legs or my feet. And it was the best feeling ever because my ankle felt so warm and cozy.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 8:25

The Lolo's the same way to show like suck the life force out of you though. She's alive for only two things to eat and to cuddle you but it's not for your benefits for her benefit. She like sucks the life out of you just like she gets like, like on the side of your body and just like curls cuddles in, and then you just get like all sleepy and I'm convinced that she's like sucking the life force out of me.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 8:50

Yes, I always tell Rudy, she's like a little Voodoo witch because I'm like, if it's lunchtime now that we're working from home, sometimes at lunch, I'll come have like my lunch, watch TV for a little bit and I'll like lay down but I'm just like laying down to relax, not to actually take a nap. But then she crawls sometimes you don't even notice that she has like, approached you until you start getting that little like, boom, dozing off. And then you're like, Get off of me, you little witch Stop it. Stop casting your spell on me, right?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 9:23

She's like Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat, and she's like your soul is mine. But the crazy thing is like, we'll be like on social media all the time, like checking our Ghoulsters or whatever. And they'll like kind of slide into our DMS and just like, like, come up and then put their head on our lap. Or like wrap their whole body around you and you don't even notice it. Yeah, and you're like, what the hell Where'd you come from?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 9:51

Until it's too late.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 9:53

Too late. So we got my idea of fall. What would you What would you say your idea fall is?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 10:01

Ah, well, I have waited so many months to say this appropriately, Gillies! Gilmore Girls.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 10:09

Oh, no.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 10:11

I in fact started watching this week so that it could call my anxiety. Um, let's see, there's so much i love about fall. Everyone knows I love pumpkin spice lattes. But right now, I'm actually drinking a caramel spiced cider tea. So I love my teas. And I haven't reached the point yet where I can drink like hot drinks because of the weather. But the temperatures are dropping this weekend. So I'm ready for it. And I like soup a lot too Rudy knows I kind of started that a little soon this year.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 10:46

It's never too soon for soup.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 10:48

Soup is so good.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 10:49

But I'm a soup guy too.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 10:52

Yeah, it's just a bummer. Because we don't really agree on the soups we like, so it's a constant, like, Who's gonna get to choose what the soup is.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 10:59

That's true.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 11:00

And then something that I really like that I thought you copied but you didn't is I don't know how to explain it. But there's always this point, like at the very beginning of fall when you're like getting in your car, and you realize that the sunset is like, or that the sun is setting earlier.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 11:21

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 11:22

So it's like, darker, and like, all of a sudden, you're like hyper aware of all of the like, just normal street lights and stuff. But it feels right, like really cozy because like the temperature has dropped like five degrees. And it's just like, fall is here. And it's just this like really warm feeling because you just like feel that like the holiday season is here.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 11:45

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 11:45

And it's just magical.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 11:48

I'm like that too, because I could tell that the the sun is further away. So it's kind of like lower in the horizon. So I always know like, Sun's not gonna be out as long as it usually is. So yeah, when to because usually like in the summer you go outside from work. When we had work. You're like, Oh, it's still like, bright outside. Like there's plenty of things to do.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:10

Mm hmm.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:10

But then you go outside at the same time, you're just like, oh, man, it's time for dinner. And you know, I think I need to go to sleep already.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:16

It's time to go home and have some soup and cuddle in the blanket.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:19

Yeah, get yourself a mug and an envelope of Lipton. chicken noodle soup, and

Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:27

Oh my god. I'm gonna tell them your secret

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:29

Tell them my secret.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:31

You know what secret?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:33

Um, know which one?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:35

Okay, so you guys know how much Rudy hates Gilmore Girls.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:39

Oh, no.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:40

Can I tell them?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:41

Yeah, you can tell them.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:41

Okay. And you guys know I have a collection of mugs. Well, I have a mug that we got on our honeymoon at the WB Bros. Studio.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:53

The W Bros.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:55

And it is a Gilmore Girls mug and it's purple my favorite color and it's the Dragon Fly Inn mug, and Rudy has turned it into his comfort mug.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 13:04

I didn't turn into my comfort mug.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 13:06

Yes you did. Boo. I saw you. You started using it for refills and everything on your soup and cereal.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 13:13

It's because it has that little thumb part. And it makes it more stable when you're holding it. And you'd like take a lot of pressure off of your your fingers and hurts less has nothing to do with fine it has something to do with comfort. It's fine.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 13:30

Oh, why is it comforting? because it reminds me of you. Oh there it is I cornered you so hard on that one. Well now you have to replace it because it used to be my comfort.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 13:47

Yeah, I don't know what we have.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 13:49

We don't have any like that. We need to get more of those like soupy shaped mugs. But we are starting to digress. So just one more thing for me is TV in general. Like I know I mentioned Gilmore Girls, and you mentioned Friends and did you mention How I Met Your Mother?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 14:12

Oh, yeah, I said I slept Oh yes, that's right. Excuse me. Um, so

Ghost Hostess Mandy 14:15

I don't know, I just feel like fall becomes that time of the year where like, even though there's like craziness with the holidays, it's also like the time you start to calm down more. For some reason. Maybe it's just because there's like more holidays and time off that we watch a ton of TV and just relax. And I'm gonna be like, enjoying it extra hard this year now that I'm finishing up school just give me all the TV.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 14:42

Um, yeah, I mean, once Fall hits, you know, the couch usually takes up most of our time.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 14:49

Yeah, so if you see a slow in our production and content, it's because Rudy's in hoodies and, blankets,

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 14:56

It's true. You remember when I was trying to convince you to get like a very Like, modern posh couch.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 15:05

Yes.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 15:06

And then you're like, No, we need to get a couch. It's comfy. And we did and like now I'm obsessed with it.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 15:13

Yes, that was my fault.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 15:15

And you're always like, you know, I can sleep here forever. And you're like, No, I want to go to bed. I'm just like, Come on, let's sleep on this couch. But you never want to, but it's like so comfortable.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 15:25

It's comfortable for naps, but I need a bed. A ghoul needs her bed for beauty sleep.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 15:32

I hear that.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 15:35

Alright, and so thanks to Monica. By the way, we are sending like extra ghouls and kisses to Monica today, because she's been such a positive light in the Ghoulster. community. And we just want to say thank you because you have added a new favorite to our list, Monica. And that is the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. So this quotation review is going to be a little different because I actually want to have a little chat about this controversy going around with it. Have you heard Rudy?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 16:09

I haven't heard.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 16:10

You haven't?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 16:11

No, what's the controversy?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 16:13

So as most of you have probably heard on top of the crappy year, that is 2020. It was the first year in more than 50 years that the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown did not air on television. The reason being that Apple has acquired the rights in order to keep up with the competition with its Apple TV streaming service.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 16:37

Is that why you made us watch it on the laptop?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 16:41

Yeah.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 16:41

Oh, okay cool.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 16:42

Well, it's not available anywhere else.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 16:44

I was wondering why is like, okay.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 16:46

But that being said, they are allowing you to stream it for free through certain days around the holidays, which is how we were able to watch it. So to be honest, when I heard all of this, I didn't think too much of it. I'm I'm kind of ashamed to say this, but I have actually never seen any Charlie Brown, or Peanuts specials. So going into this, I was honestly expecting something boring, to be honest. But since Monica recommended it, I was like, I'm gonna give it a try. Because we have a lot in common, so I might enjoy it. I'll get more into that later. But I feel like you're the one who usually has a lot of the nostalgia for the podcasts. So I'm wondering, what are your thoughts about Apple buying the rights and then not allowing it to air for the first time since 1966?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 17:37

Now that you put it that way, it's kind of a bummer. I really don't know. Why. I mean, I could see how they're trying to force people to, you know, take a stab at Apple TV, but yeah, that's kind of messed up. If you think about it that way, because what did it usually air just like on cable or something?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 18:00

No, it aired on regular TV on ABC.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 18:03

Okay. Yeah, that's kind of I don't know. I don't agree with that. I don't agree with that bowl of doing that. But I mean, I don't know. I really didn't even know about the cartoon until like recently.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 18:17

Yeah, I mean, I knew about the other Charlie Brown specials. I hadn't heard about the Great Pumpkin one. Um, and I actually, okay, so transparency here. When I read about it, I was like, Oh, well, oh, well, it's still gonna be free on Apple. So it's fine. But that's my privilege showing. Because I actually, for this episode, I decided to do some research because I wanted to be informed on the topic. And there was a really good op ed in the Washington Post by Alyssa Rosenberg. And she brought up some really good points about this, that kind of now add on to how I feel about it after watching it. But she mentioned how not all families have internet access, which has become like really clear with the whole Virtual Learning issue, like a lot of families don't have internet for their kids to remotely learn.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 19:09

Mm hmm.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 19:09

And it also creates a divide amongst kids of different like income levels. So like, say if you can afford internet and Apple TV, or even just having the ability to stream free Apple TV, if we had a kid and they go to school and someone else doesn't, then it becomes like an issue between them because it's like, well, they're unequal now.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 19:34

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 19:35

Um, so we're like taking away from children being able to have this like equal opportunity to enjoy this experience specials. And then on top of that, they're taking away from this cultural experience of people watching things together, like people used to be forced to like watch something when it came out. And like she mentioned, this is all very irrelevant now in 2020 because none of us can go to work most of us, but it's like the whole experience of like going and making your coffee in the morning network and being like, oh, did you catch the special last night? Oh, yeah, I enjoyed this blah, blah, blah.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 20:12

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 20:13

Um, so when I read her article, I was like, dang, she's right. Like, to me, it's, I now think Apple should have still let it air or like, work something out to where they let it air. But it's so convenient on their service for anyone who wasn't able to catch it live.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 20:30

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 20:31

Um, and that kind of brought me to thinking like, I know, we made a really big deal out of like our Tales from the Tent premieres for YouTube.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 20:40

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 20:40

That was kind of my vision behind it is we've built this like little ghoulster community and all of us enjoy talking to each other, or even the Hocus Pocus watch party. Like at one point, Monica again, this is the Monica episode. She was like, you guys, if I weren't on this watch party right now, I'd be freaking out thinking I'm the only one who it hasn't started for. And so it's just this experience of like, coming together and watching something live at the same time, in real time. And I think that that's kind of why we were so drawn to the YouTube premiere aspect or like, the fact that you can even do that,

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 21:17

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 21:18

And I think we want to continue to do it, because I just think it brings this like cultural experience together for people that is missing nowadays, like nobody ever does things together anymore, or like, makes time to enjoy things anymore. It's like, well, I'll do it when I have time for it.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 21:37

Yeah, I mean, yeah, we're at a point where things are so accessible. You know, they're just kind of almost like accessories to our life. Yeah, music for an example. Like, when you're doing stuff at work, or working out, like you just throw in music, and it's just there.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 21:55

Mm hmm.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 21:56

But when I was growing up, you know, you looked forward to like, the albums, and like CDs, and cassette tapes, because they always had like, artwork and stuff. And you kind of had to sit there and listen to everything. And also, like, you know, look at the artwork and appreciate it for what for what it was. So it was an experience. And you know, same thing with movies, too. Like, you would go see a movie poster, you're like, oh, that movie is coming out. You know, that's cool, I get to talk about that. Or you would see a movie trailer and stuff. And you would only see those things at the movie theater. But now, like trailers come out for movies that are like premiering, like two years from now.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 22:41

Mm hmm.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 22:41

And it wasn't like that. So we're kind of like, at a point where, you know, everything is so quick and fast and so almost disposable. But you know, what, I and that's why I kind of like, collecting stuff is because you have like that appreciation for you know, the art for what it is. Yeah. And you get to take it in and kind of like, you know, absorb it. And I think we kind of need that a lot more. Because we I know, kind of feel like we get lost in all the stuff that's floating around out there in media. So I don't know, I think that Apple should have done something where they made it accessible for you know, everybody. Yeah, I think that have been like a better way. Because it's kind of like a tradition. And if you take a traditional way, like it's, it's not cool.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 23:33

Yeah, like, I can imagine some parents, like if we had a child and we had grown up watching it, it would have been a total bummer. If you thought like, Oh, this is gonna be the year I show it to my kid.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 23:42

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 23:42

And it's gone. And I don't know, like I just, I'm a fan of Apple. I'm all about like marketing and evolving, but I just kind of felt like this one was kind of like, you could have done more. Or you could have worked it out to be where you got the best of both worlds,

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 24:01

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 24:01

Um, like, even the YouTube aspect of it is so great, because like, someone can watch something live on the premiere. And if they're busy, like some of our Ghoulsters, where they couldn't make it when it came out. They want they watched it later, it was still available for them. But for everyone who wanted to and had the time and could do it. .

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 24:19

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 24:20

They came together. So I don't know, I was kind of like bummed about it. And it kind of encourages me at least to feel like I want to keep doing more premieres and watch parties because like, for me, the Hocus Pocus thing was like, very nostalgic to begin with. But the fact that we were all like, Oh my God, we all have to save the day and we have to all be in front of our screens at that time. Like it was just like something you don't do in 2020

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 24:49

Yeah, it was pretty cool. It was kind of like going to a movie premiere. And watching a movie with a bunch of people but you know, you're the only one You and I aren't the only people in the room but we knew that there was like tons of people watching.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 25:04

Yeah.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 25:05

At same time. So that was really cool.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 25:06

Yeah. All right. I will get off my soapbox now. Should we talk about the special itself then?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 25:14

Yes, indeed.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 25:16

Okay, so this special aired the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, aired for the first time on ABC in 1966. And I usually write my own summaries but I thought this one from Hugo on IMDB was perfect. So here it is. Charlie Brown is excited to be invited to his first ever party, violets Halloween party. Before the party the peanuts gang plan to go trick or treating with Snoopy who is dressed as the World War One Flying Ace. taking his Halloween persona to an extreme. The one person who won't be joining them for the trick or treating or the party is Linus who will be waiting in his local pumpkin patch for the arrival of the Great Pumpkin. Linus believes that the Great Pumpkin rises out of the most sincere pumpkin patch. None more sincere than his own local one. The Great Pumpkin allegedly flies into the air and delivers presence to all the boys and girls around the world. Because of his belief. Linus is the laughingstock among his friends. Sally is torn between going trick or treating for the first time and attending violence. Violet's sure fire, fun Halloween party or following her love Linus and waiting for the Great Pumpkin arrival with him.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 26:33

She is so sweet.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 26:37

Yeah. Okay, so had you seen the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 26:44

I had never seen it. I didn't even know it existed.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 26:46

Are you a fan of Charlie Brown? Or are you indifferent?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 26:49

I'm a bit indifferent. I do like Snoopy. I think everybody likes Snoopy. Um, I do like when he does his flying around in his his dog house. Oh, yeah. Cuz he's that World War One Ace, but for the most part, like, I don't know. I'm not I'm not a huge fan of Peanuts.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 27:10

Is that a recurring thing and other specials? Because I've never seen it. So

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 27:13

I think so and I you know, and I don't even know. And I'm kind of confused about the whole thing. Like, I don't know if peanuts is a I think it's a comic strip. And yes, I don't know if it's if they've had like, a series of animated. Like, like an animated show. Like almost like, Scooby Doo or what or do they just have specials?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 27:39

I think it's both, I think,

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 27:42

I don't know, I don't even know. That's the the crazy thing. I mean, yeah, I like the, the special. But for the most part, I don't really know much about Charlie Brown and the Peanuts.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 27:55

Right. Same. Yeah, same here. I had never watched anything. It honestly always looked boring to me. Like I would see it in passing. Like, my mom would have it on the TV while we were cooking and talking or something. And it was just like, always something I never paid attention to. Um, so I didn't have very high expectations going into it. I was like, well, let's watch it. We might or might not be able to do a whole episode about it. Um, okay, so let's get into the movie.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 28:31

Okay, what do you want to know.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 28:32

The movie-

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 28:33

The special.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 28:34

The special. So I'm just gonna jump right in and say that this took me by surprise. And I really enjoyed it. Like, as soon as I started it, there was like a scene with Lucy trying to like pick a pumpkin. And Charlie Brown is like this one. And she's like, no, this one and it's like, so realistic. I me and you

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 28:56

Yeah.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 28:57

Like there is actual footage of us doing that.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 29:01

Yeah, I think like she ended up picking like one of the biggest ones, right?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 29:05

Yes.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 29:06

He struggled to carry it around and

Ghost Hostess Mandy 29:08

and then he like rolls it all excited. It's so cute.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 29:11

Um, I struggled with our latest pumpkin because it's so heavy.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 29:16

Yeah.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 29:16

I got lazy. I'm kind of throwing it out. So it started getting old and mushy.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 29:23

Yeah.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 29:23

So I was like, I don't want to move this because it's gonna fall apart my hands. I'm scared. But I know that I was able to put it in the trash. But yeah, we're always looking for like the biggest pumpkin and we go out there.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 29:35

The biggest and most perfect shaped pumpkin.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 29:38

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 29:39

Um, and then there was like football in it. I don't know. I just like loved the fall vibes in it. It was like the perfect transition for the season for us. And then of course, what really stuck out to me was Linus writing to the Great Pumpkin. Because as we mentioned in the trick or treat episode, there is like a No mascot for Halloween the way Christmas has Santa.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 30:05

That's not true. We have David S Pumpkins.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 30:10

Oh, that's right. But he's not like Santa Claus Famous

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 30:15

He's not like a traditional character.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 30:18

Yes.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 30:19

He was he was writing to to David Pumpkins.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 30:22

Yes, the Great Pumpkin is actually named David. His own thing.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 30:27

How's it hanging?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 30:31

Um, so I just really loved that concept. Like, they were trying to create this Halloween character that I really still feel is lacking, like, as much as we love Sam. I don't think he's like a mainstream character that everybody knows, which maybe that's why the community likes him, because he's like, the underground king of Halloween. So I don't know, I just really loved that aspect of it. And now I'm gonna kind of jump forward to the ending. Spoiler alert. If you guys haven't seen it, like, I really think you should. Um, I kept thinking the Great Pumpkin was going to arrive at the end.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 31:10

Me too.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 31:10

I was like, there. I can't wait to see what the Great Pumpkin looks like. Is it like a Skellington? type, dude? Or is it just like a big ol pumpkin? And like, it never arrives.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 31:24

You know what I thought was gonna happen. I thought that their friends or his friends. We're gonna feel really bad that pumpkin never arrived.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 31:33

Uh huh.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 31:33

So they're all gonna collectively create a costume and give him a gift.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 31:38

We have a sequel in the works.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 31:40

There you go.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 31:41

That would have been really cute. Um, but yeah, so part of that, at the end, made me realize like, this is such a good tradition. Like I get why it was a tradition because it's like, even if you've seen it every year, you watch the special and hope that the Great Pumpkin really does arrive this year.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 31:58

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 31:59

And then you wait another year to watch it again and hope for the same thing. And you just like feel so bad for Linus because you're like we wanted him to arrive for you. So yeah, and what another spot or part of the special that stuck out to me that I thought was really funny was when they go trick or treating. And Charlie Brown keeps getting a rock.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 32:22

Oh, yeah.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 32:25

They go to like multiple places. And every time they

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 32:27

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 32:28

Oh, I got this. I got this. And he's like, I got a rock.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 32:32

Poor Charlie Brown. Yeah, they're always like, picking on Charlie Brown. I think that's like saying from Peanuts. They're always picking on Charlie Brown. Really? Yeah. Well, they're always messing with Charlie Brown. Specifically, is it Lucy with the dark hair?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 32:46

Yes.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 32:47

Yeah, she's always messing it only because she's got a crush on him. But yeah, I think at one point, they're trying to carve a pumpkin, but they want to like sketch out what the pumpkin is gonna look like, and they use the back of Charlie Browns head and he gets all peeved.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 33:02

Ah, I know. That was a mean part.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 33:05

They're pretty mean to him.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 33:06

They were all kind of mean, the only nice one was Linus

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 33:10

The only nice one was Snoopy.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 33:12

Snoopy was in his own world.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 33:15

Exactly.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 33:17

Which, by the way, guys, we can't even make this up. We have photos, we will share them. Bruce. Oh, he loved this special. Like he never watches TV. But we were watching this and the whole time. His head was like pointed right at the TV and his ears were up. He was like, What is this?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 33:34

Yeah, it was strange. I've never seen him really engaged, engage in a program before and just like, stare at it for so long. And he was just so interested. And he was just watching it mostly most of the time. What are he watched most of the Snoopy parts.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 33:50

Yeah.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 33:50

But yeah, it was it was fun watching him just watch the show. I think that was more entertaining at some points.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 33:58

Well, he's so cute. How can they not be? Um, and then my, like, favorite part of the movie is when Sally? Um, yes, Sally waits for the Great Pumpkin with Linus all night and she realizes he's not coming. So she throws like a major fit over it because she's like, You wasted my Halloween night. And she storms off. And then Charlie Brown comes around and Linus is like, You ever heard of the fury of a woman scorned? And Charlie's like, yeah, I guess. And he's like, well, that's nothing compared to a woman who has been cheated out of tricks or treats.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 34:41

I like that line.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 34:42

How true is that? So there you have it, guys. Charlie Brown teaching boys from a young age to give their goals the perfect Halloween every year.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 34:56

Maybe that was the whole point of the of airing it every year just to show young men how to be better men for the future.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 35:08

That's so deep Boo.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 35:10

I'm pretty deep.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 35:13

Alright, so the special is pretty short. It's only 25 minutes. So those were just the parts that stuck out to us that we wrote down. Is there any other parts, you wanted to talk about Rudy?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 35:26

No.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 35:29

All innocent.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 35:30

No. I mean, it's, it's a great watch. It's really cute. I mean, you don't get to see a lot of hand drawn animation anymore. So it's cool seeing that. There's a couple of times where Charlie Brown gets like upset or embarrassed. And his face turns red and and you could tell that the artists use like a colored pencil.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 35:54

Yeah.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 35:55

To scribble on his face. So that's pretty cool.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 35:56

I noticed that that was really cool, too, because it wasn't something I had seen before.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 36:00

Right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 36:02

So what are your final thoughts? Would you recommend this special to someone who has never seen it before?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 36:09

Yeah, I think I think it should be part of like that. You know, chillin at home, Halloween kind of playlist you could watch at home just to chill and watch like Halloween movies. Or even like a post Halloween movie. Like to bridge the gap between Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 36:31

Yeah, agreed. I've never seen the Thanksgiving special. But now I kind of want to because I know it's such a staple too. And I enjoyed this one. So I definitely thought it was like a great way to bring in a ring in the fall season officially after spooky season. And I thought it was really cute like especially for people who love Halloween. Like you just feel Linus' love for the Great Pumpkin. You feel this need to like or you understand their need to like go to the Halloween party and Trick or treat and get dressed up like it's just super festive and it's not spooky to where if you're watching it after Halloween. You feel like oh I should have seen this during like actual Halloween season. It's just like a great like you said Rudy transition from fall or Halloween to Thanksgiving.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 37:21

Right on.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 37:23

Alright, so we are on to our second to last. Until next year, guys, that is if you liked this segment, we will be sending out a survey on our Patreon very soon, but the plan is to always bring it back for spooky season if it is something that you all really enjoyed. So this one here will definitely feed your Halloween blues. And it too is about a great pumpkin. This

Fables from our Familiar.

Is about Stingy Kack and the origin of the jack o' lantern. This story starts with a horrible man nicknamed Stingy Jack. He was known for being a selfish deceitful manipulator that had no shred of kindness. His bad reputation reached the ears of the devil, so he decided to pay Jack and take him to hell. One night in a rural Island town the devil posed as a corpse and waited for jack to stumble in his path. Eventually, when Jack finally came across the body, Jack instantly realized something was off about the corpse. It had a deranged face with wide eyes and an evil grin. Jack knew this was the end of his nasty life. The devil was there to collect his soul. Jack pleaded to the devil and begged him for one final request. He told the devil that he just wanted one more drink before he left the world. And the devil agreed and they went to the nearest tavern. They had multiple beverages and eventually had nothing left to drink. Since it was time to go Jack suggested that since he was the devil, he could use his powers to transform into a coin and pay their tab. The devil agreed and transformed into a piece of silver. But Jack had other plans. He grabbed the coin and jammed it into his pocket where he was carrying a crucifix leaving the devil trapped and fighting to get out. Jack made another deal with the devil. He said he would set him free if he left him alone for 10 years. The deal was made and Jack was free. As the decade came to an end, the devil found Jack again ready to take him to hell and get his revenge. Jack again asked for one last request on apple from a nearby tree to hold him over on his journey to hell. The devil agreed. As the devil went up into the tree to pick out his apple Jack carved four crucifixes into the bark of the tree which trapped the devil in the branches. Jack said he would set him free on the condition that he would not go to hell. This left the devil no choice so he agreed, and Jack was set free knowing that he outsmarted the devil twice.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 40:10

This is a dumb devil.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 40:13

I know right.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 40:14

Come on guy.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 40:16

The years finally caught up with Jack and years of drinking took its toll. He could outsmart the devil but he couldn't outsmart death. He made his way to the gates of heaven, but of course he was turned away and was not allowed to enter. Unbothered Jack headed down to the gates of hell ready to be greeted by his old friend. The devil refused his entry, citing the deal he made when he was alive, where Jack would not go to hell. Jack was destined to roam the world in darkness with nowhere to go. Jack asked for one last wish a small ember to help guide him through the darkness. The devil agreed and gave him one small red hot piece of coal and sent him on his way. Jack found a turnip and hollowed it out to make a lantern. Since then, Jack wanders aimlessly around the Irish countryside. It was said that local saw mysterious lights and claimed it was the roaming Stingy Jack, now referred to as Jack of the lantern. The term then became synonymous with Jack O' Lantern. The Irish community did not want this spirit to visit their homes so they took precautions on October 31st, the day of the Celtic festival Samhain since they believed ghosts were attracted to the living they too carved menacing faces on turnips and let them with a candle. They believe doing this but keep away Jack and other evil spirits. As the Irish migrated to America, they also brought their beliefs and traditions, they realized that there was a gourd indigenous to America that was much bigger than a turnip and better to carve their lanterns, the pumpkin. This led to a new tradition of Americans carving a jack o' lantern and setting them on the doorstep on Halloween night.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 41:58

That's a great story. I like that one. That's one of my favorite ones. I think

Ghost Hostess Mandy 42:03

It's cool right it's pretty cool. Yeah, we were really torn about using it in the Halloween episode and but the whole like pumpkin theme came together and we were also like it's like a perfect way to like still think about Halloween.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 42:16

Yeah a little goodbye to Halloween.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 42:19

Yes. Goodbye Stingy Jack. All right. Oh, wow. You didn't have anything to say on that one. You believe in Stingy Jack, boo?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 42:29

A little bit. I might be Stingy Jack.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 42:32

You?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 42:33

Yes. I'm always stealing candies. From the cupboard.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 42:36

I thought you were gonna say you're always trying to trick the devil.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 42:39

I'm I'm always trying to trick you.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 42:41
