S1, E7: It's Not Just a Phase / Dealing with Anxiety

Updated: Jan 4

The Ghoul Mates share how their love for Halloween developed. Rudy opens up and shares his battle with anxiety and how Mandy helped him get through it to enjoy spooky stuff again!

Ghoulster 0:01

Welcome Foolish Ghoulsters to podcast that keeps the spirit of Halloween alive all year through pop culture and nostalgia and now it's love at first fright with The Ghoul Mates.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 0:16

Hi guys. I'm your Ghost Hostess Mandy.

Beetlejuice 0:19

I'm the ghost with the most babe.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 0:21

And I'm your Master of Scaremonies Rudy.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 0:27

What is up spooky people?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 0:29

Spooking it up spook style, what's up?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 0:33

Alright guys, I kind of realized that it seems like we have updates about the podcast or what's going on with our Ghoul Mates project every week. So we are starting a new segment called

Ghoulster 0:46

Haunted Housekeeping.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 0:50

So what is the update for today?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 0:52

Okay, so today's update is we had so much fun on the last episode. I think we finally found our groove and we also decided that we're going to definitely do 12 episodes per season with our podcast to kind of give us a little bit of time to recuperate and also start brainstorming content that's coming up.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:14

Content is king.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:16

That's right. So we will be taking a break on. Oh my goodness. There we go. There's my notes. Sorry. We will be ending season one on August 7, which is actually six weeks away. This is our seventh episode. So if you've made it this far, thank you Ghoulsters and-

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:40

I do need a break though. You're making me spray paint everything black and it's making my finger black.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:46

I'm making use spray paint?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:48

Oh, yeah.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:48

No, you're the one asking can I paint everything black? I'm surprised you haven't asked me to actually paint the actual walls black.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:55

I'm gonna paint our dogs black. They're already black.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 2:00

Okay, but the even better news is that when we return from our break, we will be kicking off season two, right in time for spooky season on August 28. And we already have plans so we promise stick around because it's going to get haunted up in here.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 2:19

Up in this heezy.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 2:22

And our other housekeeping for today is that we got our very first piece of fan mail.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 2:30

That is right, exciting stuff.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 2:31

We were excited and surprise so huge shout out to our Ghoulster Irma for being so supportive, and also putting our knowledge to the test.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 2:41

Ghost Hostess Mandy 2:41

She sent us a horror trivia game, but-

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 2:44

It's pretty awesome.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 2:45

Quick little story about this. We previously bought a horror trivia game.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 2:50

Trivial Pursuit. I think like a mini Trivial Pursuit.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 2:53

Okay. Yeah, we bought it at Hot Topic,

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 2:55

Ghost Hostess Mandy 2:56

And we opened it to quickly find out that we didn't know like a single answer to any of the questions.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:01

Yeah, they're pretty hard. They're very obscure questions that no no normal person would know. Like, what color or what kind of latex we use then the Halloween mask like something crazy like that. They're just too crazy.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:15

Yeah. But so we ended up trying this new horror trivia game that Irma sent to us. And it was a really good mix of easy and I guess normal to hard questions. And by that, I mean, we're probably still gonna be terrible at it.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:28

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:29

But we decided to make a game of it on our podcast every episode.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:33

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:34

So every episode we are going to open with each of us asking one.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:40

Just one.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:41

Just one or trivia question. Yep. And if we get it wrong, we are starting a horror movie list.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 3:49

Okay, yeah, we got to get a board so people can see it with the first one's gonna have to go up there and we'll put it on Instagram. Movie number one.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 3:57

I was actually thinking about that earlier. Remember our chalkboard from the wedding.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:01

Oh yeah.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:01

Even black and orange.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:03

There you go.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:04

So we will be putting our horror movie list on our wedding chalkboard.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:09

Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:10

And looks like we're gonna find out which movies gonna go on there first.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:13

The list of the dead.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:15

Okay, so do you want to go first or should I?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:18

Um, you can go first.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:21

Like ask you?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:22

Yeah ask me.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:23

Okay. Should we ask both questions on the card? There's two cards per two questions per card.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:28

Yeah, let's do that. I mean, we said one card right or one question. We said one card.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:32

We'll just do one card one card.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:33

Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:33

to keep it simple to separate them.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:35

Okay, okay.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:36

Okay, Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane star in this 2016 supernatural film in which their son's nightmares become reality.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:46

Kate Bosworth and who's the other one?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 4:48

Thomas Jane.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 4:49

Thomas Jane is that the guy from Punisher? I think that's the guy from Punisher, Thomas Jane and Kate Bosworth. Can I get a hint?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:03

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:04

Okay. I'm gonna say, Oh, hold on. I'm gonna say The Mist.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:15

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:17

What is it?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:18

'Before I Wake' will be the first movie on our horror movie list.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:23

Before I Wake?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:24

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:24

Never even heard of that movie. To be fair, I haven't really, we haven't really seen tons and tons of horror films. And we'll kind of get into that in this episode. Why. But you know, we might be a little bit terrible at these at the beginning, but we're gonna start like,

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:41

For sure.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:42

For sure. Getting awesome at these.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:43

And we're going to graduate to the hard, Trivial Pursuit.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:46

Oh, yeah.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:46

Is it trivia or trivial?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:47

Trivial Pursuit.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:48

Trivial Pursuit.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:50

Do you want me to go next?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:51

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:51

Ghost Hostess Mandy 5:52

And then we'll do the other half.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 5:55

Oh, I would have gotten this one. Here we go. Vinvent Price starred in this 1959 ghostly classic and invited five people to survive the night. What's the name of the movie?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 6:09

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 6:10

No, I'll give you I'll give you one more guess. But they did remake it. Like in I want to say the early O's or the late 90's they invited five people to stay at this place.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 6:27

I don't know.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 6:29

The movie is House on Haunted Hill.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 6:32

I haven't seen it.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 6:34

It's a good I've seen both of them and it's pretty good.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 6:36

Okay, writing it down. Write that bad boy down. Quick disclaimer. I am a very busy ghoulish girl. I am going to school and working full time so we're probably not going to get through this list quickly, but we will make it a point to go through it in order as time permits.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 6:56

Okay, sounds good.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 6:57

Your turn.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 6:58

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:00

What items is the killer famous for wearing in the 1976? film? Alice Sweet Alice.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:08

Alice Sweet Alice. Dang I've never seen that movie and even heard of it. Geez, we're really bad at this. Alice Sweet Alice. The killer wars something that's what you're asking me?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:26

Yes. What items is the killer famous-

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:30

Hmm. I'm just gonna

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:32

For wearing?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:34

I'm gonna guess. I don't know, a jacket or raincoat or something.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:39

You're close.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:40

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:41

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:42

Well, that's all I got.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:43

Okay, so it's a yellow raincoat and translucent mask.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 7:47

Oh, you know what? I think that's, um, remember, there was like a button from our kneehigh box or a sticker and I couldn't figure out what it was. I think that's what it's from.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 7:59

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 8:01

Yeah, okay, that's cool. The only reason why I guessed raincoat is because we recently finished watching I Know What You Did Last Summer and that's all i could think of.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 8:10

Oh man, I hope I get this one right because we're already three movies in.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 8:14

Okay, here we go. Let's see. What big cat does Malcolm McDowell's character turn into after meeting with a human woman in the 1982 film Cat People?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 8:30

Oh geez. Let's use context clues. Repeat the question.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 8:34

What big cat does Malcom McDowell's character turn into after meeting with a human woman in the 1982 film cat people? Like what big cat? Did he make love to? Oh, I- turn into after meeting with me. Not not beasteality what what animal did he turn into it's big cat.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 8:59

A lion.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 9:01

One more guess.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 9:02

A tiger?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 9:02

No, a black panther.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 9:04

Oh geez.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 9:05

Wakanda forever.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 9:06

Oh, what movie was this? Cat people?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 9:08

Cat people, yes.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 9:10

All right, we just added four movies to our horror movie list.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 9:15

It's gonna be great. We need to be watching these anyway.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 9:17

Yeah, we're gonna learn a lot.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 9:19

That was pretty cool. I like that. I think that's gonna, we're gonna end up like watching like tons and tons of movies.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 9:24

For sure. Okay, now we're moving into how are you keeping Halloween alive this week?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 9:32

Okay, do you want me to go? Where do you want to go? How are you keeping Halloween alive this week?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 9:38

Okay, so I feel like we're gonna have the same answers this week.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 9:43

Well, maybe not. Go ahead.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 9:46

Okay. So I'm keeping Halloween alive by it's not I think actually, I'm sorry. So over the past week, we actually did a lot we watched or I should I watched was really for the first time The Swamp Thing and Return of the Swamp Thing or Return of the Living Swamp Thing?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 10:08

I think it's Swamp Thing Returns or something like that.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 10:10

Yeah, something like that.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 10:12

Swamp Thing Part Two. Is what we're gonna call it Swamp Thing Part Two.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 10:14

Yes. We had a mini marathon. And then we continued it with I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 10:21

Ghost Hostess Mandy 10:22

And I wanted to keep going, but we run out of time. And I've been completely obsessed with the coffee bar you finally finished for me?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 10:33

That's right. Yeah. Yeah, the coffee bar I made for you a while ago, but recently you wanted me to make it spookier. So we added some new mugs to the coffee bar to make it spookier. And then we painted it our wedding colors. It's like this flat lavender color that we used to kind of paint our centerpieces. So we kind of wanted to add a little bit of our wedding to the coffee bar.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 11:03

Yeah, I wanted something spooky for the color like a pop of color.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 11:07

Ghost Hostess Mandy 11:08

And I kept kind of like we couldn't figure out what color to do I didn't want it to be black because a lot of the mugs were black right the mugs to pop on it and we I've had the mason jar centerpiece from my wedding there for a while and I was like, let's make it special. And make it the exact color from our wedding. So-

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 11:25

yeah, cuz we got white walls and the lavender kind of like pops with everything else. We might even paint the coffee bar itself make it black. Since I'm painting everything black.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 11:35

You are, you're crazy. Um, another thing too, though, is for the longest time I was trying to make my mugs look cohesive somehow or like look like they go but now with all this Halloween stuff we got going on.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 11:49

We've got to replace all the mugs with something more Halloweenish.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 11:52

No, I just think adding a few pieces is making it all come together. So that's pretty exciting. Okay, how are you keeping the spook alive?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:01

Well, this past weekend. I want to I'll make this short. But I recently started to get back into comic books. And I'm going to start reading this one from DC about this evil Joker/ Batman hybrid. Oh, he's taking over to the different universes. I think that's what's happening. But we were when we were out to go pick up the first issue of the second version of it. We ended up going to what's it called? My Oh, my home what's called home

Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:38

At Home.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:39

At Home. There we go. Went to At Home to-

Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:41

With our masks.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:42

With our masks

Ghost Hostess Mandy 12:43

And we didn't close to anyone.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 12:45

Yeah, there wasn't a lot of people out there. And we just kind of we were looking for little bits and pieces for the apartment to paint black. And we actually stumbled upon some Halloween decorations at At Home. They're really cool. So we grabbed a couple of things. And,

Ghost Hostess Mandy 13:04

and we adopted another dog. Sorry.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 13:06

And we adopted another dog. His name is what's his name?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 13:10

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 13:11

Zero from the movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas. So we found this decoration of Zero and I hung them up next to Mandy's coffee bar. So we just floating around just hanging out Mickey and all these different little mugs, so you'll see him on Instagram. He's just gonna be there. Chillin with us chillin with other dogs.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 13:33

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 13:33

But that's how I'm keeping Halloween alive. Just kind of sprucing up the apartment making it look more spooky.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 13:40

Which is actually a really good segue into our real topic. We kept you guys guessing on what's what's it called? At the tip?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 13:50

Ghost Hostess Mandy 13:51

Yeah. On the edge of your seat, that's the word. Yeah, we for probably the whole week. We didn't know what we really wanted to talk about this episode, right, we knew we really, really enjoyed our last session,

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 14:07

Ghost Hostess Mandy 14:07

We really liked having a conversation with each other and learning about each other. And something we realized is that for a lot of people, it's like we're coming out of nowhere into this lifestyle.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 14:22

Ghost Hostess Mandy 14:22

for us, too. And so I think, did you want to say something?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 14:27

No, I agree. It kind of came out of left field. It's always kind of been there at the surface kind of bubbling for me and Mandy, and yeah, it's just, it's just exciting to kind of learn these new things about Mandy and about me. And it's just really fun. I'm just having a blast, in quarantine at home just like exploring these new things. It's just great.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 14:50

Yeah, so we, we honestly kind of feel like we just met each other again like that relationship feeling because As it turns out, we were hiding a lot of not things like not in a bad relationship way. But like, I think both of us kind of locked up certain parts of ourselves. That kind of led to a lot of miscommunication or it wasn't necessarily miscommunication, but we definitely felt like both of us were holding back.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 15:24

Ghost Hostess Mandy 15:24

We loved certain things.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 15:25

Yeah, exactly.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 15:26

Because of a lack of sharing those things with each other.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 15:30

Mm hmm.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 15:30

And so we kind of want to share our history of our love for Halloween/horror/spooky things.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 15:39

Ghost Hostess Mandy 15:39

But we want to take it back, like all the way to our childhood and kind of take it through our adolescence and our adulthood to where we met.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 15:50

Ghost Hostess Mandy 15:51

And then kind of share how all of this came to be.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 15:55

How it all collided together.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 15:57

Yes. And so I think we kind of talked about or I'm can't remember if I mentioned that we kind of want to spend the rest of this season developing our story with you guys and sharing who we are our expertise, not necessarily our expertise, but like where we're coming from moving forward from here and we want you guys to get to know us because you're going to be our spooky little Ghoulster Community. So we feel it's only fair to kind of explain to you guys why we're just like, appearing out of nowhere like a ghost.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 16:30

Oh, spooky.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 16:32

Okay, so, who should start?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 16:35

Do you have a coin? We can flip a coin?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 16:38

We need a spooky coin. Flip a knife.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 16:43

We can flip a dog and we have two dogs. Yeah, I can go if you want. Want me to go. It's up to you.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 16:49

Okay, let's take it by childhood. Go.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 16:52

Childhood. I think so, Halloween, and I guess spooky stuff has always kind of been there for me. My dad loves Halloween. I think he loves it more than any other holiday. And I kind of picked up on that. On top of that he was always bringing movies home. And we would always go to our local video store and pick like all these VHS tapes and stuff. And it was always exciting because like, he didn't have Netflix, you couldn't just jump on there and like scroll forever and stuff. You just had to go over there. And make sure you kind of go through everything. And a lot of things didn't change when you were at the the VHS store or the Blockbuster. So you had an opportunity to kind of like go through everything. So that was always there. In elementary school, middle school in high school, I would always try to dress up for Halloween.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 16:55

Mm Hmm.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 16:56

Even in high school, I would always try to dress up for Halloween because it was just fun. And not everybody did it, especially in high school, but I didn't care like I love dressing up and freaking out people. So that's always been there. And I think I get a lot of that from my dad because he's always he was always and he still does dresses up for Halloween and goes to work.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 18:04

That's awesome.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 18:05

Maybe I have a picture of him recently. I think he came home and he just had like this wig on. It's like really? Weird. You've seen that picture

Ghost Hostess Mandy 18:13

The tall one?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 18:14

Yeah. I don't know what he was. But yeah, he had just come back from work. And he had a wig on. He looked hilarious. But yeah, I mean, giving out candy too. I love doing that too. Just like to see other people's costumes and making like, kids happy. You know, it's just been a big part of my life, but it's never been as big as it is right now. Because of you, because how much you love Halloween? I know. I know you love Halloween more than I do. But I mean, I I'm pretty sure I'm like, second. My whole family right behind you.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 18:53

Do you think would you say that you were in love with Halloween yet as a kid

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 19:00

Yeah, I've always been in love with Halloween.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 19:02

Like, did you feel this? Like you clearly loved it more than any other day of the year?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 19:09

Oh, yeah, for sure. Okay, like it'd be months out and I'd, and I'd start getting my costume ready for Halloween. I think the only other holiday that you do that for us maybe Christmas, but I usually like just get my gifts like a couple of days before or a week before but for Halloween, you're like working on your stuff like once in advance,

Ghost Hostess Mandy 19:28

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 19:28

Because you want to be ready and you want to be like badass when you show up to wherever you're going to be showing up to. But yeah, I don't know at some when Halloween rolls around and you open up like a like a fresh thing of latex. Like, wounds and stuff. It's It smells so magical even like the grease paint used to like paint your face like that. I love that smell just Halloween is just awesome. Like the weather's perfect, you get candy, you get to dress up as the spooky character that you've always wanted to, or whatever character doesn't have to be spooky, but any character, and you just get to be somebody else for a while and just kind of leave all the crap that you've been dealing with, like through the week or the day, and just have fun and just escape for a little bit,

Ghost Hostess Mandy 20:18

which is what this has become for us.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 20:20

Yeah, pretty, pretty much and I'm happy that we're trying to make that like a daily thing. Like, just if we can, you know, bring a little bit of escapism, and joy to somebody that's having a bad day and that maybe this makes them feel better. That's gonna make me feel better. And you know, that's something that I want to do. I want to share these stories with everybody so they can like, feel the way I feel about Halloween and just love you know,

Ghost Hostess Mandy 20:47

Definitely. Lurve.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 20:49

Ghost Hostess Mandy 20:50

Okay, so since I knew we were going to talk about this, I've kind of been thinking about it pretty intensely,

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 20:59

Uh huh.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 20:59

But I can't, for the life of me tell you like where my love for Halloween started. And I think I've mentioned this in a previous episode, but I mean, my earliest memories of Halloween are just like my mom putting my costumes together?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 21:18

Ghost Hostess Mandy 21:18

And there's this like, iconic costume in my family that she dressed me up as this little witch. And she actually made that costume for me.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 21:31

My mom did the same thing. She made a couple of my costumes. I remember that. I can't believe I didn't even mention that. But yeah,

Ghost Hostess Mandy 21:38

yeah, so she made my costume. I don't to be completely honest. I don't remember if she made any others but that one like always sticks out to me.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 21:46

Mm hmm.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 21:46

And then after that, as I kind of like went into elementary school, my brother started helping me put my costumes together. Oh, like he would do my makeup. I'd wake up really early before school and he would do my makeup before you would do my make up for Halloween,

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 22:01

He didn't peel your face off?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 22:02

No. He I actually dressed up as Queen Amidala one year. And he made all that like the white with the red lips and the dots.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 22:12

I remember that yeah, I rememeber that picture.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 22:13

It was really cool. And then after that, I don't really know like I'm trying to stick as far as childhood. I just remember that it was like my favorite time of the year because all of my family would come over. And we would decorate and my mom would always make the same thing. Spaghetti and hotdogs.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 22:31

Sounds delicious. Yeah. Was it spaghetti and meat sauce or meatballs?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 22:36

I think it was meatballs. I don't remember the details.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 22:40

This is rough for me because I'm trying to lose weight right now.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 22:43

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 22:44

All I can think of is spaghetti and meatballs. That's all I can do. So you're killing me right now.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 22:51

Um, and I don't know I just that time of year always felt extra magical to me like the kids on the streets. I've mentioned this before, too. It's like it was really like Hocus Pocus when in my childhood where the streets are filled with kids. And also something else that sticks out to me is Sabrina was still on the air.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 23:11

Uh huh.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 23:11

The original Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 23:14

What's her name?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 23:14

Melissa Joan Heart.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 23:15

Melissa Joan Hart.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 23:16

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 23:17

With her millions and millions of Britney Spears cameos.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 23:22

It was one episode.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 23:23

but she's come on a couple of times in the show. No?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 23:25

No, you were just watching one episode that day.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 23:28

I'm pretty sure she's come out. No, no, yeah, you're right. Because Melissa Joan Hart came out one of her music videos.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 23:34

Yes, that's and a movie.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 23:36

And a movie apparently.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 23:37

No, wait. I don't know. That doesn't matter. We're not talking about Britney. We're talking about Sabrina. So I want to say Sabrina used to come out on Friday nights still so I would always look forward to it. And then Disney Channel also had like their Halloween specials. So they'd premiere Disney Channel Halloween movies on Friday nights. So it was just like my whole childhood is like when Disney Channel was at its prime. And Halloween was still cool and people would Trick or Treat and it hadn't turned into this weird like people have events and gatherings instead, for it. Okay, so that's kind of our foundation as kids, what was it like as you started getting a little older, like into your teens?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 24:19

My teens. I mean, I've always kind of been consistent with you know, dressing up. I think maybe towards high school, maybe towards the end of high school, I might've gone to a party or two for Halloween, but for the most part, I tried to at least Trick or Treat in my neighborhood. And sometimes we'd go with, like friends that had little siblings and stuff. So I help them and go take them Trick or Treating. So it was always there. Um, I guess my my costumes got a lot of a lot more gorier the older I got. So I would add a lot more bloody things. But I mean, I remember, my mom made me a costume when I was in elementary school and it was a Batman costume. I think my mom still has it. And if I can find it, I'll take a picture of it. But after that, like I started making my own costumes and then just making them gorier especially when I started discovering slasher films.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 25:30

Mm hmm.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 25:31

And I just liked those characters and I wanted to kind of bring that terror to everybody at school and just sit there all creepy, or just walk behind people and freak them out. It was just always fun getting a rise out of people.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 25:45

That's awesome. And so that's also when you started getting into slasher movies then is what you said.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 25:50

Yeah, I think I saw a couple when I was a kid, but I didn't really understand what was going on. I think my dad or or wasn't my dad. There's more of my cousin's they will watch them and stuff, but I wasn't really interested. And maybe it wasn't until high school or between middle school and high school. I started watching slasher movies and I really liked the Friday The 13th Series. And of course, Freddy was there too. And it always freaked me out because it just him coming into your dreams and just terrorizing you. It's just scary. Michael Myers not too much. He was scary and cool, but I don't know. It just didn't really interest me that much. I do like Halloween. I actually like I think it's Halloween 3 Season of the Witch. I really like that one. But that has nothing to do with Michael Myers.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 26:45

And I don't think I've seen that one.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 26:46

It's pretty good. It's cool. I think what they were originally wanted to do is kind of like make Halloween about different stories.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 26:52

Mm hmm.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 26:52

It's never went that way. But I like that one. But yeah, slasher movies have always been my thing. I don't think I can't think of any like other spooky things that I watched. Ghostbusters of course, you know Hello, Ghostbusters. Oh, I was a Ghostbuster when I was a kid for sure.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 27:10

Oh, jeez.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 27:11

That was awesome. But yeah, that's pretty much it. Halloween has always been a constant in my life. I always celebrated somehow every year no matter what.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 27:20

Okay. Yeah, for me, I think I'll probably talk a lot more in this segment for me. I think my teenagers really developed my love for Halloween and just my alternative side in general. I I don't really know what happened but I think somewhere like around middle school, I just covered like Linkin Park.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 27:43

Oh yeah, Linkin Park.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 27:45

That was just kind of like, not like in a bad gateway drug. But like, Linkin Park was kind of like the gateway to me discovering like, alternative music and emo music. And then I became completely obsessed with Evanescence. And then from there, it just kind of naturally evolved to me like loving the clothing and the jewelry and the makeup like I loved wearing eyeliner and the dark colors. And I even attempted to dye my hair black, but I'm freaking crazy and my hair doesn't take color. Like I've met with like professional hairstylist and they've been amazed to that my hair just doesn't take color. And so my mom used to tell me, well, you can try it, but if you dye your hair black, it's never gonna go back to the color. It was literally washed off in two weeks. I think my hair was like virgin hair. So I kind of gave up on that. But something that really stuck out to me was through high school. A lot of like, older adults didn't approve of the way I was dressing.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 28:48

Of your alternative lifestyle?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 28:50

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 28:51

Your alter ego.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 28:53

I remember one time I used to wear like red eyeliner, and one time there was like a substitute for my AP Science class. I think it was like a biology class. I don't remember. But he stopped me at the door and he was like, Are you high right now? And I was like, What?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 29:11

High on Halloween.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 29:12

I'm like, no. And then he's like, Why are your eyes red? And I'm like, it's eyeliner. Like, what is your deal? Like, I'm a freaking nerd in an AP class. Like, why would I be getting high on lunch?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 29:23

Are you on the devil's lettuce right now, young lady?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 29:28

So that was just like, super. That was just an example of ways I was constantly treated. I remember one time my dad completely lost his stuff over me wearing these like, long dangly skulls for earrings.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 29:44

Ghost Hostess Mandy 29:45

And so I didn't care though. I was in that like, teenage phase where I didn't care.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 29:50

Uh huh.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 29:50

And something that really stuck out to me recently is we were browsing for like t shirts online and I saw one that that had like, this little witch girl and she goes up in like every phase she becomes like a different like goth female.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 30:04

Oh, yeah yeah.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 30:05

Says it's not just a phase and that just kind of also clicked for this episode is that I know my mom always used to defend me. Bless her. She always supports my goals and dreams. But I remember she used to tell my dad like it's just a phase she's gonna naturally like phase out of it, and she'll go back to a normal person. Sorry, mom. But I think that's just something that I've discovered over the last year kind of is that it's not just a phase where a lot of people and I feel like our community is very what's the word like stereotyped?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 30:46

Yeah, stereotype for sure.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 30:47

Um, like you have to have a lot of courage to like, live it and breathe it and be who you want to be. And as I got older, I think I kind of stopped having having that like brave feeling of I don't care what anyone thinks.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 31:03

Ghost Hostess Mandy 31:03

Because I was like, through middle school and high school like I would sing at all, every show I could in school and I didn't care if kids were watching, I would dance like, I was always myself and I didn't care. Like I didn't give two cents what anybody thought of me. And as I got older, I don't know why or how that changed. But I started carrying like, Oh, I don't want them to stay like, Well, why is she dressing like that she's too old to be dressed like that. Or it's not appropriate for someone who has her kind of career to be dressed that way or anything. And so those pieces just all kind of went away, but through the years. It always sticks out to me that like my mom always supported it, like our family picture that we took for Christmas.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 31:52

Yeah, I remember.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 31:53

We were wearing like the black and red plaid.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 31:56

Oh yeah.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 31:58

I did my like dark mane up, and I wear a black cross. That black cross, my mom gave it to me.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 32:05

That's cool.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 32:05

When I was in that 'phase'. And so I was, like really made me happy. And I sent her a picture and I was like, look who's back and she always knows, like, when I have those little moments of sending her a picture with my dark makeup. I think she understands like, it's always been a really big part of me, even though I don't live it and breathe it. And so I think you kind of met me past that phase.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 32:29

Yeah, that's true. Um, I've never, I guess. My parents were very accepting of my stuff, I guess. I mean, I was, I guess I was, 'skater' slash alternative kid. I was just a kid and I like to skateboard. I listened to punk music and, you know, alternative music and Boys to Men. Boys to Men was the jam back in the day but I mean, the only like argument I had was my mom hated baggy jeans. And those were all the rage back in back in the day. And all I wanted were some big old JNCO Jeans.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 32:30

And now you're the opposite.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 32:31

Now I'm the opposite. I'm like, Oh my god, this is so baggy. And I can't use these mostly because when I'm doing work, and I'm shooting, I can't have baggy jeans because I'm always running around and it gets caught on something and I just can't deal with that. But yeah, back in the day, I was alternative too. I think, my first tape first tape. My first taste of alternative music was either Smashing Pumpkins, or no, it was Green Day, actually, Green Day was like my first taste of alternative music, which was like punk or whatever. But yeah, it's always kind of been there and my parents are pretty cool with it. You know, they had to deal with my other two brothers too. And my mom had a daycare so she dealt with those kids, but they've always been accepting except for the JNCO Jeans, but for the most part, they were really cool with everything. My dad was cool that because he loves Halloween and I love Halloween, so whenever I wanted to dress up he's like, yeah, let's do it.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 34:09

That's awesome. Something I forgot to mention too. Is that another reason Halloween like really are this spooky life really grew on me through high school is because a lot of the classic remakes happened during that time.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 34:26

Oh, yeah, that's true.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 34:27

Like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 34:32

Yeah, that's correct. I think I was in college by then.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 34:36

Yeah, cuz your old.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 34:37

I'm an old geezer. I saw the originals. No, not really. Well, I did see the originals but now when they came out.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 34:44

Yeah. Which is something I'm looking forward to doing soon. But yeah, all of these things started to come out when I was in high school and surrounded by friends who were into the same interest. I'll never forget that. The very first time I saw A Nightmare Before Christmas was in a movie theater for their 3D special.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 35:03

Oh, that's awesome.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 35:04

Yeah, it was so cool. And I'm like always mad every year that they don't release it in 3D in theaters because it was so cool. There's a scene where Jack is like, and I Jack the Pumpkin King. He like gets close to you. And then later he like popped out like his head pops out. It was so cool. So that was just one of the, like many different things I experienced in high school. Another one was My Bloody Valentine came out.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 35:36

I did see that one in 3D. That was cool.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 35:38

Yeah. And so just like the, I guess the fusion of the music, I was listening to the movies that were coming out the influence of my friends. I just like really developed this love and passion for it. And I would even find myself watching like scary movies by myself. And I think that's probably when my mom was like you're a weirdo because I would like love watching like House of Wax. That scene where her lips are glued shut is like my biggest fear in life because I love talking obviously into just imagine having to like tear your mouth open.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 36:13

Did you have any friends that were into Halloween too? Or was just you?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 36:19

Well, I was lucky enough to have Oscar.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 36:21

Oh, that's right. Yeah.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 36:22

So he played a big role in that too. It was like when we became friends. We bonded over The Killers originally. I think. I've never told you this story, but Oscar and I met on Xanga.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 36:35

No, you told me about this.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 36:36

About Xanga?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 36:37

Yeah, you told me about this.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 36:38

Okay, yeah, so we met online and I think it was like, we liked talking to each other at first over The Killers. I heard remember. That's cool. Um, so Oscar and his family really love Halloween. Like they go all out too. So it just kind of like helped emphasize the time of year even more every time and he was like the only person who ever under did when I was like already planning my outfit, or my costume for the next year like in December? Um, so yeah, I just think my teenage years really played a very large influence in my love for spooky things.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 37:14

Did you guys ever do a couples costume?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 37:17

Yes. So I should say that Oscars was not my boyfriend. He was my bestie.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 37:22

Ghost Hostess Mandy 37:23

Um, but one time, every year I would be like, we should do this so that it could be cute. And he'd always be like, No, I'm gonna do this and then I'd be like, desperately trying to make it match somehow. So one time he was Edward Scissorhands, and I was a plant. I made myself into a tree or something.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 37:42

One of the ones where he cuts up?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 37:44

Yes, pretty much. I thought he would. I don't remember what happened but I wanted to be like poison ivy or something and he ended up being Edward Scissorhands. So I decided to just be one of his trees.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 37:55

That's cool. That's pretty that's a clever costume.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 37:57

I didn't come out very well. But um we were Batgirl and Robin once that was really cute and for that so I actually threw a Halloween costume when I was in high school

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 38:09

You threw a Halloween costume?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 38:10

Halloween Party, my bad.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 38:12

I was like you threw at who? For what reason?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 38:15

I'm excited over here, but I went super all out like the way we decorated our apartment that one year.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 38:21

Ghost Hostess Mandy 38:22

I did that to my mom's house like the entire house.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 38:25

You turn your mom's house into a haunted house?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 38:27

Pretty much like the entire entry level was completely like decorated, and I made these really cool invitations. I guess that's where my love for like graphic design started and I never even knew, but I printed them like on yellow paper.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 38:43

Ghost Hostess Mandy 38:43

And then I actually wrapped them in the Halloween spiderweb they sell.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 38:47

Oh, that's cool.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 38:48

So it was spooky when you opened it but-

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 38:50

That's cool.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 38:51

Um, so it was just things like that, like all through high school in my teenage years. There were all these spooky things coming at me. it was the time of my life.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 39:02

Your Spooky Life?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 39:03

Yeah. Okay, so now we move on to your college years.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 39:12

So in my college years, I know Halloween kind of took a backseat I did dress up once in a while, but it wasn't as crazy as it was when I dressed up in high school and middle school. You know, I was in a fraternity, and we did have Halloween parties. But you know, being the coolest dress wasn't like the top priority. It was just like having fun and partying. But there's something I didn't mention. In high school I started developing anxiety or how well they back up even further. So I have ADHD. With that comes with comes a couple of things. And I deal with anxiety and mild depression. But you know those things kind of, you know, hindered me kind of exploring more horror stuff and Halloween and stuff, and it would come and go. But you know, that and then like being young, in your 20s, and just having fun with other people, because you're like starting to drink and going out a lot more, you know, those are the things that move to the forefront and all the things you did when you were younger, they kind of fade away. But, you know, there was a couple of things here and there that popped up. I remember I had an opportunity to go to Dallas, Texas, they have a, I think it's called the Fright Fest. And they're like, I got to kind of see people dressed up as zombies because they had like a zombie walk and meet different people. But it kind of reignited all this love for Halloween and horror. I actually got an opportunity to meet George Romero. He was the he's the godfather of the modern zombie movie, and the modern zombie. So that was pretty amazing. But you know, it still kind of slowly kind of went away because of my anxiety. And if people don't know, when people have anxiety attacks or panic attacks, it's kind of kind of comes out of left field.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 41:26

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 41:27

Your body thinks it's in danger. So it kind of like pumps your whole body full of adrenaline. And you just like, you know, start to freak out your, your heart starts to race and then like, you kind of have a delayed reaction with your brain and you're just like, scared, you know? And, you know, I stopped watching a lot of horror movies, and other things that were spooky only because I, you know, I felt like anything could trigger it. And I was just kind of afraid of everything. Not just like spooky stuff, but just like being out and about not being safe, it was just it was just a crappy time. And and I have these like levels or little kind of

Ghost Hostess Mandy 42:08

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 42:09

Phases. It usually happened. Like in big events of my life, that's when the anxiety would like come back. But recently when I first met Mandy, you know, I was fine at that point like I wasn't having any I was having, I wasn't having any anxiety issues. We were dating, but leading up to the wedding, it started to like, come back. Like I said, big, you know, changes in my life. It starts to resurface. But the one thing that she did that nobody else did was she forced me to deal with that issue. And like started going to therapy, do some testing to see what was really going on. And that's when I got the ADHD diagnosis and ever since then, I've been less afraid of things. I'm still afraid I still get anxiety, but she's helped me deal with it and try and conquer it. And from that I'm able to just enjoy like scary things. Again, I'm like, hey, let's watch this scary movie. And let's watch this serial killer documentary. So I kind of owe everything to you. As far as like, feeling young again. And I haven't felt that in a very, very long time. Even when we first met. You still made me feel young. And I loved you. And it was exciting. But now with everything that's been happening with like the quarantine and we're discovering these new things, I just feel like amazing. And I think this is the best I've ever felt in my entire life, even when I was a kid like opening up the Nintendo for the first time. So it's just been it's been awesome. You've helped me conquer a lot of difficult things and face a lot demons that I've been like pushing back for the longest time, but it's been great. And I want to thank you.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 44:07

You're welcome. I wasn't expecting that. I think for me, I want to share that. It's not always easy being the tough love, person.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 44:22

Ghost Hostess Mandy 44:22

But I think that that was a really big part of you overcoming what you were going through is, there were times when you were like, I just need you to sit down and support me and it's like, well, I need you to stand up and frickin fight it. And I don't think anyone had ever done that with you. It's like, I think a lot of the times I'm like, No, how are you gonna overcome this? You can't let it take over and beat you,

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 44:51

Right? Mm hmm.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 44:53

So I'm really happy to see how far you've come and hear that you've come out of the other end of it and can appreciate all of that tough love I gave you.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 45:05

Yeah, I mean it's gonna be a continuing battle like it's never over. But I think I've this is the the biggest strides I've made in a very long time and it's awesome because I know how to deal with things now. And before it would happen to me like the the anxiety and the depression, it would just last so long, like throughout the whole summer or like for the whole fall. But now it's just like, Oh, I but you've helped me identify what's going on and I'm like, okay, I can diagnose it and then I can move forward. And they're not as long they don't like drag on as much which I which I love. I think if I hadn't met you, and I was dealing with the quarantine right now, I'd be out of my mind right now.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 45:48

That's so true.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 45:49

Because this is scary stuff. And it's just like, oh my god.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 45:55

Instead you gave it to me.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 45:56

Yeah, exactly. But yeah, it's been just been great. And you know, for the listeners that we have out there, I know how difficult it is dealing with anxiety and panic attacks, they are the freakin worst because they come out of nowhere. And you know, and the hardest part is just talking about it with somebody.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 46:18

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 46:19

Because you don't understand you think that there's something wrong with you, but there's not because there's tons of people that have the same issue. And it's just like, you know, where do I turn you know, and and what I would have to say is, you know, try to go see a therapist and you know, talk to your closest friends talk to anybody about it, I try to talk to everybody about it. So I kind of get it out there. And you vocalize the issues so you can internalize like what's going on and just to let you know that you're not a weirdo, that like this happens to everybody. And if you ever have if you ever need someone to talk to you can hit us up, you know, you know, what's our email?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 46:58

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 47:00

Or hit us up on Instagram, like, I know what I'm talking about. And I know how to deal with those things. And I could, you know, we could help you guide you, you know, in the right direction. I mean, there's been a couple of times where I've talked to friends that have kids that are going through this stuff, and I'm just like, Hey, you know, do X, Y, and Z and see if that helps. But you know, I'm just happy to gain back my love for Halloween because of you and for dealing with like these demons.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 47:30

Yeah. And I just think it's, I know, we kind of went into this whole different topic a little bit, but it's important because that was a really big reason why we didn't know that part of each other.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 47:45

Ghost Hostess Mandy 47:46

Because we kind of haven't talked about my college experience yet, but I kind of also started to lose part of that. It wasn't that I lost it. It's just that I wasn't around people who love too

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 48:00

Ghost Hostess Mandy 48:01

And I was busy with school and working for the newspaper, but I will say kudos to my newspaper staff. We always celebrated Halloween so like we would dress up for Halloween we would have Halloween parties. And one one time I was like such a nerd. I told them like, let's have a font party for Halloween because we're all nerds for the newspaper and everyone dressed as a different font.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 48:26

Oh, man, that is super nerdy.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 48:29

And I was Futura, so I could also dress like Katy Perry at the same time.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 48:34

I think the only thing nerdy i've done is I think I was an old man one time and I was giving out butterscotch candies to people. I think that's the nerdiest thing I've done for Halloween.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 48:46

No, I'm telling you. I was a nerd. A nerd being accused of being high in science.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 48:50

You are still a nerd.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 48:53

Yeah, that's true. I can't lie about that. But anyway, yeah. So I don't know as I went to college. Kind of like Halloween was just during the Halloween season. But I always celebrated during Halloween like one year, I went to a zombie walk. I had that Halloween party with the newspaper. I flew back to El Paso for two different Halloween parties and then came back and still celebrated Halloween.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 49:17

So did you go in the same costume? Or did you have multiple costumes?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 49:20

They were all different costumes. Yeah, even with Oscar, I went to two different two or three different parties, and they were all different costumes.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 49:28

I think the only time I've done that is going to work in one costume and then changing for a party. But that's it.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 49:35

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 49:36

And the first costume is super easy.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 49:39

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 49:40

Wasn't nothing difficult or complicated.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 49:42

That's another thing too, though. Like also as you get older, I was really lucky that when I first got into the workforce, I had like very good office cultures that celebrated Halloween and yeah, I really did a lot but then, as I've gotten more into my career, it's just been like that same culture hasn't been there. So before as you were younger, like, everyone would dress up for Halloween.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 50:05

Yeah, exactly. Maybe it's because it's too hot and nobody wants to dress up and die in their costume.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 50:11

That is fair last Halloween I insisted on wearing my Hocus Pocus sweatshirt. I bought it and I was dying.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 50:18

Yeah, I remember the Back to the Future costume debacle with me that I was passed out during a bar crawl because it was so freakin hot.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 50:25

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 50:25

Like this is October, it shouldn't be this hot.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 50:30

So that kind of just puts us back to where we met, which for me was a couple years post college. So where were you at when you met me? Because I think I kind of tried telling you that I liked Halloween. But then you're just like, Oh, yeah, me too. But then I was always like, he doesn't really get it.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 50:51

I think at that point. I had just gotten out of what you're asking me where were we were at when we first met right?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 51:00

About Halloween yeah.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 51:01

Okay. Well, Halloween, you know, kind of the same thing. Just, I would always, I think at this point I was more dressing up as funny things.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 51:12

Mm hmm.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 51:12

And inappropriate things. But yeah, it was just about like, inappropriate costumes. And and, you know, parties and stuff. It was fun, but it wasn't spooky. It was just more about like, you know, drinking and having a good time. But it wasn't spooky at all.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 51:29

Were you watching horror movies?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 51:31

No, no, nothing like that. Okay, we were just kind of getting ready for a party and stuff and having a good time. I mean, tons of everybody dressed up. But it wasn't about like the core of Halloween. We didn't go get candy or any of that stuff.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 51:44

It was just another reason to party.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 51:46

Pretty much.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 51:47

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 51:47

It's like Cinco De Mayo or whatever other

Ghost Hostess Mandy 51:51

St. Patrick's Day.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 51:52

St. Patrick's Day. It was just one of those drinking days. So when I when you and I met you know, it was just one of those holidays where you drink and it wasn't like a holiday where I'm gonna get dressed up to be spooky and just remember my childhood. I wasn't there anymore.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 52:10

What was going through your head when I would tell you that I was like really obsessed with Halloween?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 52:19

I don't know. I kind of felt like I think everybody says that. I didn't really believe you.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 52:25

Yeah, cuz we may like right when the season started.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 52:28

Right. Yeah, yeah. I really didn't believe that you were I thought that I was in Halloween more than you.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 52:34

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 52:34

For sure. And I was totally wrong about that. Because you're way more into Halloween than I am. But not well, not not way more but a little bit more than me.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 52:45

I'm more into the spirit of it and you're into like the actual costumes, I think.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 52:51

I'm into the costumes and the party aspect of Halloween. Okay, because the costume part kind of reminds me of my childhood. But then the party part reminds me of my youth when I was, you know, out of college and had friends and I was able to do whatever I wanted to and explore my life and figure out who I was. So it's those two parts come together. But yeah, I think you were more about the spookiness of Halloween and like, the traditions and the and the decorations, and I wasn't really about that, until recently.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 53:30

Yeah, and so he would always say, like, Oh, yeah, I like Halloween, too. But then it was just always like, the actions weren't there. And I'd always be like, let's watch a scary movie. And he'd be like, No, I don't want to, I'd be like, you don't like Halloween? Like, what's your deal? Like? It was just this constant frustration, because I just didn't understand what was going through your head because you'd say one thing, but every time I wanted to do something, it just wasn't there. And so It was very, that's kind of where I mean like miscommunication kind of happened because I don't think early in our relationship, you felt comfortable telling me why you didn't want to watch scary movies.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 54:13

Well, I mean, I liked you a lot. And I didn't want you to think that I was a weirdo. But I kind of, I've kind of held back on a lot of things, when it came to my anxiety. Kind of, you know, being vulnerable or putting myself in situations where I'd be upset, I would avoid those all the time and It's just not watching scary movies or whatever, like any situation where I'd be upset, I would try to avoid it. So I wouldn't, you know, accidentally trip my anxiety trap and you know, get all anxious and stuff. And, you know, I believed at the time that Halloween or not Halloween, but scary movies, or things that were that dealt with the real issues that were sad or anything like that. It's something that I just didn't want to deal with because I didn't want to, like, you know, accidentally trigger my anxiety. So I avoided all those things. No matter what, and I just kind of focused on like having fun and like doing ridiculous things. But I always wanted to, you know, you know, get back into like, the Halloween stuff and looking into serious things that might not be comfortable. And just to kind of grow as a person. I wanted to continue on that road, but I wasn't able to, especially when we first started, but you kind of unlocked that part of me and made me and had and made me you know, get over those things. Yeah, move, you know, faster, just how I ripped off the latex off your face.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 55:51

Yeah, and I think that's and so I really wanted to share that I know it's probably not entertaining or what you guys expected. This episode, but I wanted to share I think that history in our relationship is important because for a long time, because Rudy wasn't interested in the movies or necessarily just crazy about Halloween the way I was, I just kind of felt like every year was me forcing him to dress up or like him just playing along, but he didn't really care for it. And it I don't know, it just kind of took a toll on me. And I kind of started to, I guess, just not push it anymore because I could tell the same enthusiasm wasn't there. And I don't even think that he can pinpoint this. But I actually realized that our honeymoon was the first time that Rudy learned, facing his fear was the best way to cope with his anxiety.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 56:50

Oh, that's right. Yeah. I would have to say, that was a really good way to kind of let things go. I was really terrified of any of the rollercoasters we faced when we went to Disney, or to California because we took a trip to California specifically to go to Disneyland, Disney World. Not Disney World, but California Adventure, Universal Studios, like all the things you would see, and in California, and I was even like getting on the plane is terrifying. It was terrifying for me. And before when I was a kid, I loved flying, which is crazy. I remember I would take trips and I would like pretend that I was like surfing on the plane. And then out of like, nowhere when I started getting anxiety, I couldn't even get on a freakin plane. And, you know, she kind of helped me through it. She's like, Hey, we're gonna be okay. And I was like, okay, we are okay. And then I don't know what right it was. I think it was The Tower of Terror.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 57:52

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 57:53

What was the first ride that we got on?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 57:56

The first ride we did was the little Jungle Cruise thing.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 58:00

No, the first-

Ghost Hostess Mandy 58:01

Then we got an Indiana Jones.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 58:03

Yeah, well, those weren't like, scary

Ghost Hostess Mandy 58:06

Space Mountain?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 58:08

Yeah, Space Mountain was one where I was kind of like, well, this is a roller coaster. I haven't been on one for a very long time. I just need to get on it. You know, get the first ride out of the way. Let it scare the crap out of me scream and yell, and then it's gonna be okay. That's what I felt. And she said the same thing too is like, just get on it. It's going to be fine. We're going to do it. It's going to be awesome. We're going to be fine.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 58:32

But you do you remember what you were afraid of?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 58:35

I don't remember what it was.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 58:35

You were afraid that you are going to get a heart attack.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 58:39

Yeah, that's the thing about anxiety, anxiety attacks, and it's and you'll like read about it. Like when you look it up. People think that they're dying, or they're having a heart attack. Which doesn't make any sense because your heart is pounding and if you were having a heart attack it should stop. But yeah, I was worried about I was gonna have like a card. Episode when we were on the ride, which didn't happen, because I was just like screaming and yelling and I just felt so good after that ride, because I let it all out and it was it was fine. And I think the next test was a Tower of Terror because I don't like those types of rides anyway to begin with, but even that was fun.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 59:21

For you.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 59:22

You you were I saw I remember seeing the picture of you on the ride you just like seemed fine and then me I'm like holding on to this little bar.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 59:31

You look like your boots are shaking.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 59:33

My boots were shaken in hell, man. That doesn't matter how much anxiety I have. I'm always gonna be scared of that ride ever since it was well.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 59:46

Tower of Terror.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 59:47

Tower of Terror, The Twilight Zone.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 59:49

Now It's Guardians.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 59:49

And now it's Guardians but the one that was the Twilight Zone is always gonna be freakin scary.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 59:55

I loved that version of it.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 59:57

No, the Twilight Zone one. It was so creepy. I I don't know why they got rid of it. It was so good.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:00:02

Yeah. But I guess my point to all of this is that the honeymoon was the first time that really was like terrified to death of something. And I was like, just freaking do it. And then in the back of my head, I'm like, Oh crap, what if I'm wrong, and like, this is all on me now.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:00:22

And it's crazy, because when I was a kid, me and my family would go to California all the time. And we'd go to like Knott's Berry Farm. And they have like, tons of roller coasters, and I love roller coasters. So, you know, I am so happy that I met you because I've also rediscovered that. And, you know, you know, I face those fears. And now I feel great. And I can keep moving forward and continue to learn about like, how to deal with this stupid thing.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:00:49

Yeah, and I think the lesson to take from that is that you discovered that facing that fear and letting yourself get terrified. Helped you fight your anxiety.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:01:00

Yes, for sure.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:01:01

Fight your anxiety. like it was a release.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:01:03

Exactly. Yeah.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:01:04

And that's kind of when things turned around for us not too long-

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:01:10

Not right away?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:01:11

after that. I unfortunately broke my ankle.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:01:16

Oh, yeah, that's right.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:01:17

And that was kind of the turning point for my adulthood with spooky things. Do you remember?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:01:25

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:01:27

I had all this time at home by myself because Rudy was working, and I don't know what happened that I was just like, I'm gonna start celebrating Halloween now because it's like the only way I'm gonna get my mind off of things. And so I started reading Hocus Pocus, the sequel. And I started watching The Addams Family, like I just started doing all of these things that made me happy that were revolving around Halloween. And you can actually look at my personal Instagram, Mandy Spooks. There's posts on there like if you go back I even started a hashtag that was called Mandy's magical summer mood or something like that. And I was just like celebrating Halloween by myself over the summer. And I started to realize that Rudy was like, there was this scene from The Addams Family where Wednesday and Pugsley is that his name?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:02:19

Yeah. Pugsley.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:02:19

Um, are like in this school play and they're super dramatic. And I sent you this scene I told you, oh my god, I'm watching The Addams Family. And these would totally be our kids. And he quoted it. You quoted the scene that I was freaking out over. And little by little like, I started telling you all these things. I was like discovering or enjoying while you were at work. And I was like, he doesn't like Halloween, but he knows like everything. And so that was kind of like the turning point where I was like, he likes all the things I like, and I've been doing this by myself over the summer in secret. And that's just kind of when my wheels started turning that I was like, maybe I just misunderstood your whole attitude to me,

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:03:01

Mm hmm.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:03:02

Um, and so after that we started to watch Jaws. And we started going to like Zia Records was my escape like it was like my one little thing I could do for the entire week, because I could only leave my apartment once. Like, I was only allowed to leave the apartment once because it was too dangerous for me to be going up and down the stairs. So we would go to Zia on my little scooter.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:03:25

Yeah that little scooter.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:03:27

And I would just shop through all of their cool spooky little things until I was like, Okay, I'm tired and back to the apartment for a whole week I'd go and that was just kind of the turning point for us. Like we slowly started, like embracing Halloween and spooky things again,

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:03:45

Mm hmm.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:03:45

And then of course Christmas came things got wrapped up and then the quarantine happened.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:03:51

Yeah, it's it's insane.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:03:53

And I don't even know how I stumbled upon like the spooky community on internet. gram

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:04:00

Mm Hmm.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:04:01

And I have, thankfully a personal relationship with her. But for those of you who don't know, there's this health coach called MissVonFrankenstein on Instagram. And I saw her account. And I was like, Oh my god, she's not like all these other influencers that have like, the lit in like, what is it called? Like the lit filtered photos and looks. I was just like, This girl is like me.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:04:28

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:04:29

I was like, she's, like all the stuff that I want to be posting. Because for so long, I was like, oh, Instagrams, like, you have to have this perfect feed with like the same filter on all the photos if you want to, like, get a following. And so she kind of like got my brain working. And then that's when I was just like, I want to do something like I want to do something to express this love. And that's when I started looking at the podcasts. And then that's finally when I was like, let's do it. There's nothing like it and so the rest is history. But that's kind of what brings us to, to where we are now is like, for a long time, there was so much miscommunication in our relationship. And I had locked up all those things because I thought Rudy didn't like them. And I took them out of the closet while he was at work for a while. And then all of a sudden, before I knew it, it was like he loved everything I loved. And we were just not sharing it because we weren't communicating with each other.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:05:28

Yeah. And then, when that door was open, I started like, bombarding you with all these like crazy things that you've never heard of or seen.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:05:37

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:05:37

And in you, like kind of showed me a lot of things that I had never seen, like the Monster Squad. I'd never heard of it. heard of it until, you know, I met you. And I was like, wow, this is a great movie. And I never even like known that this existed. And this was what this came out like in the 90's. Right?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:05:54

I want to say the 80s.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:05:55

Yeah, something like that and it has like a huge following. So I mean, it's great. just discovering these new things and even showing her these things like sharing things that you love is always a great thing because you can remember those things and you kind of keep it alive.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:06:10

Yeah, for sure. And I think it's it's funny too, because just a couple weeks ago when we were when we were watching the fried Friday The 13th movies as research for our podcasts, Rudy started going, Oh, I want to see this. And you'd be like, he'd be like, Oh, it's about a serial killer, though. And it's like really dark and morbid. So I don't know if you'd want to see it. I'm like, Well, yeah. And then he'd be like, but then I also want to see this and it's about this. It's like really gory. And I'm just like, what, wait, rewind, like you didn't like watching horror movies with me. And that's when he's just like, because of my anxiety. And so that's kind of it's it took up until how long in our relationship? Almost five years.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:06:56

Five years. Yeah.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:06:57

Which is insane that I've known you that long.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:07:00

I feel like I've known you for like two years.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:07:02

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:07:03

Yeah, it's just, you know, it's just feels like brand new every time we do something like this.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:07:09

That's true. And Rudy says, like, the cutest thing at night, because I'm like, it's bedtime. And it's like a mom and a child every night. I'm like, it's bedtime, because we have to get up and walk the dogs. I don't want to but then he pulls this card on me. It's because I'm having so much fun with you and I don't want to go to sleep. And then there I am dying to stay awake to wake up in the morning and do everything over again.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:07:33

And then I take my little naps during the day and you're like her wake up.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:07:36

While I'm like suffering with work and school, and this podcast, but it's just been so cool. And something that actually didn't make it into the Friday The 13th episode too, was that for me, I hadn't enjoyed or let myself enjoy scary movies in a really long time. Like I cannot tell you the last scary movie I saw before we started watching Friday The 13th I want to say that it was like, in college with Paranormal Activity because it terrified me sleeping in the dorms after that. But when we saw that movie, I have never had that feeling in our relationship because like now that the apartment spookier, we had the lights off.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:08:25

Mm hmm.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:08:26

And the apartment was cold and I had to pause the movie to go to the restroom. And I hadn't had that feeling in like so long where I was like, I don't want to go to the restroom. So I was like Bruce walk me to the restroom, to our dog. So he walked me to the restroom and then I did the quick peeking behind the shower curtain.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:08:52

Yeah, you always had a look under the bed or check the shower. Make sure nobody's in there.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:08:57

Yeah. So.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:08:58

If you would've told me I would have escorted you to the bathroom.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:09:01

I know but my pride got in the way. And so I don't know if you've noticed, but even after that I was like, let's lay closer to each other.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:09:10

I was just trying to get comfy because I was having such a great time. But now that I know I'm gonna make sure that I'm your knight in shining armor. Make sure when you go to the bathroom, I'm right behind you. And I'll turn on all the lights to make sure that you feel great.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:09:24

You're not gonna be here. There's nothing there, Boo.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:09:27

Ghosts don't exist, Mandy.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:09:31

Um, so I don't know. That's kind of where we're at. I'm sorry if this was a boring episode for everyone. But I really wanted to talk this through with Rudy because I don't think we've ever completely talked to each other about our past with the topic and how we've gotten to the point where we are now because it's kind of strange that we went from like having pretty much no decorations, or home decor, I should say in our apartment like right there were pieces from our wedding and some really nice Johnny Cash pieces that my friend, Irma also gave to us. But we just never like, had a cohesive thing going on. And it was like this quarantine brought out like all this stuff. And then once we started, we were like, Oh my God, we could do this with this. And we can do that, we shou should order this.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:10:17

Now we have too much stuff.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:10:18

Yeah. But it's been so fun. And then this past weekend, we forgot to share the number one spooky thing we did this past week.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:10:26

What was the number one spooky thing?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:10:27

At Walmart?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:10:29

Oh, yeah. Tell him.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:10:32

So we went to Walmart because long story short, my frustration with Walmart pickup grocery stuff is that it never gives you what you need. And it defeats the purpose of trying to not go into the store and spread the the COVID

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:10:46

The 'Rona.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:10:47

Yeah, so first thing I told Rudy that day, you can't keep looking at stuff anymore. If you look, you're gonna find stuff. And before I know it, a few aisles down. What does the little kid say? I found these Ghoustbuster toys and I really want you to come see them.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:11:06

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:11:06

So there I go. And then we're looking at his old school Ghostbuster toys and I'm like, eh, and then I'm like, Oh my god, there's a Scooby Doo van. So then I was just like, I really want the van because we could take pictures with it. And then we went through another aisle. And then I discovered Playmobil has like these actual full sets.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:11:30

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:11:31

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:11:32

Yeah, I think the first Scooby Doo van you saw was from the movie Scoob! but then we went in. We were leaving, we went through a different aisle. And Playmobil had all these kids where it was like a vehicle, and the characters

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:11:47

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:11:48

And I was like, that's pretty awesome. I was like, just get whatever you want. I only I only wanted four toys. And she's like, Well, okay, let's get on but that's it. And then we turn the aisles. She's like, Oh my god, I want to get this. And then I was like, I just wanted four things.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:12:04

I only got four things too.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:12:07

But needless to say, anytime we go to Walmart, and we pass the toy aisle, it's a bet it's bad news for Mandy, because I'm gonna always check and see if something is there that I want to get. But you know, the stuff that we got is pretty cool. I think we got great value from the two things that we got. Do you want to talk about those things?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:12:28

Well, it wasn't two things because we also learned that the toy companies get you because they don't sell the things together. So

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:12:36

They're tricksters.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:12:38

I wanted the Scooby Doo set because it's the van with the gang in it. But guess who's missing? Shaggy and Scooby.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:12:45

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:12:45

We have to buy Shaggy and Scooby in a different set.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:12:48

Even even the Scoob! version, the original version you wanted to get from the movie Scoob! You would. They had this the Scooby characters that would go in the van but they wouldn't match up like the Blue Falcon would be with Scooby and then Shaggy would be with like somebody else. Yeah, so you would have to buy a bunch of different versions of the damn toys so they all match they are tricksters and I don't like it.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:13:15

I know Yeah, I don't- it almost made me not want to get it.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:13:19

Are you going to start collecting the Playmobil ghosts and goblins from the Scooby?

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:13:24

Yes, so that was another thing to they have this little set of like the villains from the Scooby Doo show or movie? Show? Cartoon? Yeah and so it's one of those like the you get it and then need to surprise who's inside so there we were, like touching all of them to try to get the one's we wanted.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:13:46

This one is the pumpkin one. I promise you. It was it was like something else. I was like, I was sure that it was a damn pumpkin but it wasn't a pumpkin head guy. So.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:13:55

And they didn't want to do it too. Cuz I'm like once you start it's gonna be an addiction and until you collect all of them, and there we were opening them and being like, we should go back and get all of them.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:14:05

It's like those Funko toys. I know. I know you're like, I don't want to get any of those because once I start getting them we're gonna want to collect all of them.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:14:13

Yes, it's terrible.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:14:14

I don't have that problem with the Funko's because I cuz I don't really like them that much. I have like one or two of them. And I think that's enough.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:14:22

You say that now, but then more cute ones come out.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:14:25

Yeah, but I mean, I would only get like the horror ones like I wouldn't get like

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:14:29

You know how many horror ones there are?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:14:31

Yeah, but I already have like a couple of horror characters and I'm happy with those. I don't need to get other ones.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:14:36

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:14:37

Like, we have the Elvira Funko. And that's cool, because it's a nice little, like one piece. I don't think there's any other ones of her. So that was just fine. It was cute. She's on a couch. So it's cool. Like I only need that one. It looks like you.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:14:52

On the red couch, with the bangs.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy 1:14:54

With the red couch and the bangs.

Ghost Hostess Mandy 1:14:55
