Meet The Ghoul Mates and sink your teeth into your new favorite spooky podcast

Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein Couples Costume

Ghoulster : 0:01

Welcome foolish mortals to the podcast that keeps the spirit of Halloween alive..all year through pop culture and nostalgia. And now, your Ghost Hostess with the Mostess.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 0:17

Hi guys, I'm your ghost hostess Mandy and I'm here with my producer and Hubbers Rudy.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 0:22

Hey guys, it's Rudabaga.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 0:24

And we are The Ghoul Mates. So before we get started, I kind of just wanted to give you guys a little disclaimer that this podcast much like us is going to be all over the place including Halloween, spooky stuff, film, TV, music, pop culture, nostalgic things, pretty much everything that makes our ghoulish love story, something that makes us keep falling in love every single day. And we hope that you guys also fall in love with the things that we love along the way. So a little bit of background on how this podcast came to be. I was actually on the hunt for something that satisfied my like spooky side but also like my nerdy side, I am actually part of a Starbucks Facebook group. If you don't know about it, it's because you're not cool enough to be a part of it. So shout out to my leaf breakers. I was looking for something that kind of shared passion for spooky stuff, not necessarily horror, or ghost stories, but just like the love of the decor and like appreciating it year round. But also, there's another side of me that's like very nerdy loves video games and pop culture and nostalgic things. And so my husband, Rudy, here, he is deep into the video production world. He's passionate about it. And he's actually been asking me for a while, like, hey, let's do a podcast. And I was like, No, I don't want to but then as I did more research trying to find the right podcast for me, I realized there was a void in the podcast realm, and I feel like we could fill it. So this podcast is going to be kind of like all over the place, but in a good way, because it's like all of the things that made us fall in love. So we're not exactly sure where this podcast is going to go yet, but I'm thinking more along the lines of Halloween costume tutorials, possibly some pop culture related recipes or spooky recipes. Definitely some reviews on the latest video games, movies, TV we watch. And pretty much anything nerdy that comes up and gets us feeling spooky year round will definitely be something we mention. Feel free to give us some feedback on Instagram @TheGhoulMates. I'd love to hear from you guys tell us what's working, what's not working? What have we not done that you're like these people would be amazing if they tried like the newest Lego haunted house or something. Share your nerdy and spooky things with us and maybe we'll talk about it. So to kick us off, I'm gonna let Rudy kind of share a little bit about himself and then I'll share something about myself.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 2:53

Hi, guys, it's Rudy. You can call me rudabaga. That's what my wife likes to call me. So a little background about myself. I've been doing video production for about 15 years, and in those 15 years, I did some audio production. And I know that Amanda has been looking for a creative outlet to kind of showcase all the things she loves about Halloween and the fall and things like that. So I told her, Hey, let's do a podcast. I think it'd be something great that you and I could do together that's very creative. And maybe we can get a small audience to talk about the things that we love.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 3:25

Do you want to share some of your favorite nerdy and spooky things?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 3:30

Well, spooky things I kind of I grew up in the 80s and the 90s. So I kind of grew up with slasher films. Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, like all those slasher movies, I remember growing up watching Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Swamp Thing, but most importantly, Godzilla. I'm a huge Godzilla fan. I kind of grew up with all those things.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 3:54

So I don't really know where my obsession with like Halloween started. To be honest, I know like with you sometimes I know you've mentioned like Godzilla was kind of what started it all for you.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 4:05

Yeah, right. Mm hmm.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 4:06

And and Jurassic Park?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 4:08

Yeah. Jurassic Park was a big one too. Because in the back of my head, I always wanted to be a filmmaker. Specifically, when I first saw the first Godzilla, the 1954 Godzilla. And I always thought, oh my god, that's so cool. Like, I wanted to know how they did like all those special effects and stuff. And I wanted to do that I wanted to do special effects for movies for the longest time. And then I saw Jurassic Park, and they kind of pushed the envelope with the new digital technology that was coming out.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 4:33

Yeah. And see, like, for me, I was just thinking just now I'm, I'm like, I don't I can't trace anything back to like how my obsession with Halloween started. We lived like in this perfect neighborhood when I was younger. And it was like at the peak of Halloween, like when the streets were still filled with kids and like you dress up and like your whole family would get together and like, it'd be this huge group that would like go trick or treating. And now that doesn't exist and it makes me sad every year. I don't know if there's still certain neighborhoods that do it. But I think it was that feeling that I had on Halloween where I like love getting together and dressing up and seeing all like the little monsters and costumes on the streets. It was exactly like in the Hocus Pocus movie, where they show the kids trick or treating like that, how Halloween was when I grew up. And I think that's part of the reason why Hocus Pocus is like one of my favorite movies favorite Disney movie favorite movie in general, because it's which is a Halloween. But it also reminds me of my favorite memories as a kid. So I guess that's where my obsession with Halloween kind of started. But along the way, I've also realized that a lot of my obsession with pop culture in general like video games and movies, also comes from how close I was to my brother growing up, which is interesting because when I met you, you guys are kind of in the same age range. You reminded me of all of the things I grew up seeing my brother enjoy. So it's been awesome experiencing them as an adult now with you, because I understand them now. And I appreciate them so much more for what they are like as far as the visual effects and the storytelling and just how awesome like certain costumes are. You guys are gonna learn this very quickly, but my memory is terrible. So like, I will remember, oh, I used to watch Back to the Future with my brother, but I wouldn't remember the storyline like, I can be talking about a TV show I watched two weeks ago and I won't be able to recall certain details. So being able to relive a lot of those pop culture moments with Rudy now has been awesome. And so I think our goal is to kind of relive a lot of that nostalgia with you guys as well and create memories with new things coming up kind of like our next episode with Scoob. So before we move any further, I think part of what makes us so unique is our ghoulish love story. So I kind of wanted to introduce them to a little bit of our background and why Halloween is so special to us. Do you kind of want to tell your perspective on it?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 7:07

Well, we met on a dating site. And one of the first questions I asked you was what you thought about Ben Affleck being the new Batman because I know that you had written something about how big of a Batman fan you were and I was intrigued by that. Plus, you were very cute. And I wanted to get to know this girl. So I know we talked about that for a while and we would find ourselves going on dates to like Halloween stores.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 7:34

After we met It was like we always knew that time of year was extra special. So we'd planned special things like our first year living together. We went out to a fall festival at a farm that was amazing like in the movies. I mean, the weather wasn't quite there because we live in Arizona but it was just like, I imagine like when you watch Halloween Town from Disney Channel, you saw like all of the pumpkins and they had all of the Fall activities. And they had a chili festival. So it was just like the food. They had live music, it had everything you could imagine. So it's like every time I think of Halloween, like that's my standard for it. And so after that, of course, our relationship evolved and we got engaged and like the very first thing that came to mind was we have to have a fall wedding because that's just who we are like, how could we not and so our wedding was, again, like I said, all over the place. It was a country wedding because I'm also very obsessed with Johnny Cash. And there are stories to tell there that will probably make it to the podcast eventually. But part of the wedding was also pumpkins. Like, everyone was so annoyed with me like Why does it have to have pumpkins too, and it's like, it has to have pumpkins and pumpkin spice cupcakes like everything about it has to be us like we didn't want a cookie cutter wedding. And so I think that in itself will be a great episode to share later but it's just this feeling I get. I remember last Halloween was my first Halloween after the year we got married, if that makes sense. And I remember being on the phone with my mom and walking into Michael's and being like, Oh my god, like this feeling feels like even better now because I associate it to my wedding. So it's like that season is just like everything I love. Like I loved it before and now it's like that much more maximized because it reminds me of one of the most special days.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 9:33

You're getting a little wispy right now, which is gonna happen from time to time this podcast, she gets very emotional but so do I. I might shed a couple tears. You know, back to the the Fall Festival I kind of saw it differently. Because you were thinking about like Halloween Town, and I was thinking about like a slasher movie. I think it was Freddy vs. Jason. There's like a scene where Jason starts killing a bunch of teens in a cornfield. And we were like in that corn maze, remember? Yeah, that's the only thing I was seeing Jason on fire like trying to hack us up into little pieces. But that festival we went to was pretty amazing. did remember the pumpkins that we got? Those were huge pumpkins!

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 10:15

It was my first time picking like fresh pumpkins out of a pump.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 10:18

Which took forever, by the way, because you couldn't figure out which was like five pumpkins or something.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 10:25

It needed to be the perfect plumpie shape.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 10:29

And speaking of pumpkins, do you remember the pumpkins we drove to the wedding?

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 10:34

Here's a appetizer to our wedding episode. We got married at a pecan farm. And that pecan farm actually has a Pumpkin Festival a week after our wedding a week or two after our wedding. So I contacted the farm and I said, Is there any way you're going to have those pumpkins by the day we get married and if so, can we borrow for a decor and so he told me last minute, I'm sorry, I'm not going to be able to get the pumpkins in time for your wedding. So we went to Fry's that evening, and they were on sale for, like two, four or $5 or something crazy, but they were like beautiful pumpkins. So then I called everyone I knew that was driving from Arizona back to Texas. And I was like, does anybody have room for pumpkins? Nobody had for pumpkins, or did they did Matt and Rachael end up taking some or do we fit them in?

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 11:21

I think we were able to fit them in but they were prepared to take some pumpkin but I was like, hey, let's try to fit them in the car. If it fits, then nobody's had to take pumpkins, but we were able to fit all the pumpkin.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 11:31

Yes. So we had literally a carriage of pumpkins. I think I have photos somewhere. So we will definitely be sharing those on our Instagram @TheGhoulMates. Yeah, so our pumpkins I like to believe that they were actually picked at the special farm we went to and then that they were like taken to Fry's magically. As you can tell, we have lots of memories we want to share with you guys and if you are interested in hearing those, please let us know on Instagram @The Ghoul Mates we are more than happy to share a lot of our ghoulish love story with you, we're just not quite sure how much you want to hear about it just yet. So before we move forward on the second portion of this episode, I thought it would be fun to kind of have a lightning round of questions between us just so that you guys could get a glimpse of who we are, and our preferences and what we like and what's to come on the show. Because obviously, that's gonna be part of what molds our little podcast into something. So I'll go ahead and ask you the first thing that comes to mind. Ready? Favorite movie?

Yes, I know. It's gonna be harder than it seems.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 13:37

Okay, earliest memory of Halloween.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 13:41

This is really random. But I remember one year, my mom and my brother were forcing me to be Catwoman and I didn't want to do it. And it ended up being like terrible because it was super last minute. I was wearing like jeans, a turtleneck and ears and I was like a total nerd nerdy kid. That's like the earliest I can remember.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 13:58

I'm assuming that's your worst costume too because I was gonna be my next question.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 14:13

That's such a morbid question, that says a lot about you. I don't know how instantly how instant it is, but I assume it's better than any anything else just like slash my throat and be done with it.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 14:52

What is the first ride you go to Disneyland?

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 14:55

First ride... I'm very strategic. So it depends. But if I had a choice, it would be the Nightmare Before Christmas version of a haunted mansion. Like if I could choose.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 15:07

Favorite TV series?

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 15:09

One Tree Hill.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 15:14

Okay, and this is the last question, what two horror characters would you put together to fight?

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 15:20

Oh, what about Freddy Krueger versus leatherface because they both got messed up faces. Hopefully that helped you guys get a glimpse of how all over the place we are. So this next part of the episode is going to be kind of a preview of what our full podcasts might be like if it's a Halloween costume edition. We want to share our stories with you along with like, the mishaps and lessons learned about the costumes. And eventually, if you guys request it, we might do some video tutorials for you guys. So kind of going with the theme of our ghoulish love story. I thought it would be great to share our first costume as husband and wife with you guys. So to put things into perspective, we got married on October 6 2018. So our very first Halloween after that was not even a month later. So it was obviously, Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein. So I'll kind of just share what led up to it and then I'll let Rudy kind of share his side of the story. So most girls put on their wedding dress for the first time, like once it's finalized and start crying or they're like, Oh my god, this is the one. When I put mine on, I was like, This wedding dress is gonna make us sick, Bride of Frankenstein costume! Like, I don't know, I mean, I mean, this is again another story for another day, but I had my wedding dress design, like all I wanted in my wedding dress was these Bell sleeves, like I didn't care what I had to do like I was going to have Bell sleeves and once I saw it come together. I was like, Oh my God, if I throw like a black belt on this with that wig and some boots look amazing. So I kind of ran the idea past Rudy. I think before we even got married, I was like, What do you think if we're Frankenstein and the bride this year, because, you know, we just got married and it's like the perfect time to do it. And he was like, yeah, if you're gonna let me do it the right way. That's kind of always his response to everything. So I'll kind of let him take the ropes from here and share his side of the story.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 17:31

I try to be as faithful as possible to the material and it sounds really nerdy and stuff but I want to look like oh my God, this guy came from like the studio and and it's the real Frankenstein. So you know, we had looked at her dress and we like found the pieces for it to like, make it come together and then we found the wig that fit pretty perfectly and then we helped her do the makeup. But we also found like a latex mask that looked pretty cool. It looked pretty accurate to the universal monster found a suit that Frankenstein wears, got some boots, and then I just kind of distressed everything look like I just came out of the ground and then I just kind of stumbled around and mumbled around and kind of stood next to people and freaked them out during Halloween. But playing those characters are is always like a fun thing every year for me.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 18:23

Yeah, I definitely recall. I didn't know that he was going to stay in character the whole night. So we went to this Halloween party that my friend that my friend's family was throwing and when we got there, he just like stopped talking. Like he just stayed quiet the whole time. And I was like, I didn't know he was gonna do this. So my friends were looking at me like is he gonna stop doing that? And I was like, I don't think so. So people started getting creeped out by it, which like, was pretty cool. And then at a certain point he was like, like he just like started mumbling groaning like the monster would and so people started freaking out more. So yeah, that wasn't something that he prepped me on at all. And I just had to kind of like go with it. So something we kind of always mess up on every year though is that we think that we're professionals and we only need like an hour to get ready to look like we just came from the studio, like Rudy mentioned. So I remember like, starting to get ready super late before the party, but I was like, Oh, it's fine. Like, I know exactly how I'm gonna do my makeup. The only difference is like, I'm gonna have to paint my face white. And Rudy's like, Oh, yeah, I know how to do like because he wanted to do the stitches on his arm like if he was actually sewn together and he's like, Yeah, I know what I'm doing it'll be fine. So we start getting ready and my white face makeup like doesn't go on at all like I thought it was gonna go on like regular foundation doesn't that didn't work out. My face was looking like splotchy with like white splotches all over my face. And then Rudy was like the glues not drying because he was using like Elmer's glue to like create the stitches on his wrists. And so before I knew it, it was like already the time the party was starting and like my makeup was half on. So I was like, I don't even know what to do. So I ended up like rinsing off the white paint from my face and just keeping my eyes and trying to like put them like back together to make it look like I didn't wipe some of it off. And then Rudy just had to like go with it. And I think his like fake stitches came off on the drive over. Yeah, did. So but all things aside, I think with like our actual, like my wig, his mask and our actual costumes, it all came together. And we actually ended up winning the costume contest, which was amazing, because I've never actually won a costume contest. And again, it was like super special because it was my wedding dress. And it was pretty cool that my friend's sister and her husband like recognized that when they gave us the award and they were like they just got married and they did an amazing job of like putting this costume together this year. So Shout out to Nino and Brenda for giving us that award. So if you guys want to see the costumes and how they looked, check out our Instagram at the goal mate to see the final look for that Halloween. And if you like that story, let us know so we can continue to share our other Halloween costumes with you guys share the stories behind them because they are actually a lot better than this one. There. There were definitely mishaps with the other ones as well.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 21:31

I think at some point, I took up DJing duties and I think we have a picture of me DJing that night with Frankenstein.

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 21:39

Oh yes.

Master of Scaremonies Rudy : 21:40

I didn't actually DJ but I just wanted to make it look like I was like

Ghost Hostess Mandy : 21:43

he was DJ Frankenstein looked really cool though. So I will definitely share those photos too. Like I said, just be sure to check out our Instagram because that's my jam. Like, I wish I could do a podcast every single day but that's not ideal. So I will definitely be sharing tons of fun spooky and nerdy things on our Instagram every day all day because that's just I live and breathe Halloween, and geeky stuff. So I want to share it with you guys too. So that was our first episode of the Google mates. I hope you guys had fun getting to know us. Just a quick insight of what's to come. Rudy is going to be fully focused on producing but he's always going to be my little featured co host. I don't know why I called him little, but he's cute. But just to give you guys a little sneak peek of what's to come the next episode will be a movie review of the new movie Scoob. I thought it would be the perfect first episode for us because I haven't mentioned this yet. But we have two amazing rescue pups that are our little monsters. So I'll definitely be sharing more about them on this journey with you guys. But I thought that would be the perfect first real review to give you guys because it's something that's nostalgic it has something we love which is a dog and it also is spooky. So why not? Jinkies! Okay, so be sure to follow us on Instagram to stay connected because we will be sharing content. Stay connected with us.
